We're going to have a ton of dead money next year.  Gene Smith gave huge bonuses to Lewis, Poz, Mincey - no way any of them are still on the roster.

I hope we don't spend exorbitantly.  What would be the point?  You go get the high profile free agent when you're sure you're close and he can round out your roster for a championship push.  We are clearly still building and have no need for high price free agents.  Grow the young talent will be a massive struggle but I sure hope we don't go signing our future monies away on good players to come in and waste their good years on a still overall bad team.

Not nearly as much as we did this year.  This year we had nearly 35 million in dead money.  Next year if we cut those three we'll have about 11 million in dead money and we'd actually be saving about 8 million dollars on the cap because their base salaries are so high.

Lets just hope those mistakes aren't repeated.

A good break down of what our cap situation is looking like for next season.

The top 4 need to go along with Gabbert!

The only way this team is going to get better is to sign talent.

Who knows.  With a strong draft and more than a handful of FA you never know how much a team can improve in one offseason.

We will have the high draft picks

We have the big money to spend.

It's now up to the gm to do it

Wasn't TMD banned at one point a few years ago?

What happened there?

How many 2012 Eagles do we have to see to see that you can't get a quick fix through free agency.  Colts model is more like what we need to do.  A la, get a quarterback.  That's it.  Do that, it will cover a lot of other ails.

He's not saying go off a limb and spend all of our money. He's saying sign some stopgaps to help us be competitive. Big difference.

Looks like Khan can't take another season like this and will spend more than most people expected!

"The Jaguars didn't do much in free agency in the offseason, mostly just some patchwork starters, but it appears they plan on spending in the offseason out of necessity."

Actually, this article just reinforces what MANY here actually have been saying all along.  This year was never about building up the roster.  It was always about tearing it down.  That's why you saw them sign so many players to 1 year deals.

I fully expect to see the team being quite active in free agency next year to till holes they can't address in the draft.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I know I should not be. But I am surprised at how many people don't get this. It should not be that hard to see. I would expect the team to look at adding help on both lines through free agency. I also would not be surprised to see them add a veteran running back and linebacker.

If you look at the offensive line, and how incompetent the interior of that line has been this year, the team has to take an expanded approach to this rebuild.  Just getting the QB is not going to solve anything if the new guy is getting pummeled in the same manner as the last few QBs.

I think everyone recognizes there's a need to address both lines to assure we've got decent protection for the new QB, good run blocking for whoever is back there carrying the ball, the ability to not just pressure but actually get to the QB, and the capacity to stop the run.  One player can't fix all of that, but with all the picks in the draft in May, the team can certainly target many of these issues.

Still, I would prefer to see them looking at the free agency market to fix the offensive line.  Find proven players who can be plugged in who can allow your new QB to develop without having to deal with the kind of beatings we've seen previously.  Perhaps if Gabbert had been given a better line to play behind, he would have developed?  We'll never know for sure.  Now he's damaged goods.  I'd prefer to see them avoid that mistake in the future.  If they're going to spend big, do it to protect your QB and to help your running game.

Please don't compare Dave Caldwell to Gene Smith.  In just 6 months the differences are vast.

Caldwell - likes speed and playmakers

Caldwell - drafts from big conferences

Caldwell - identified existing talent sucked or were not worthy of long term contracts.

Gene - liked to be different - small schoool needle in the haystack dude.

Gene - gave contract extensions based on your talent compared to teammates (e.g. If Mike Thomas is the best player on our team, we should lock him up).

Gene - prioritized combine & workout results vs on the field results.

Gene - thought married players had a competitive advantage for some reason

Gene - claimed to draft BAP but never really seemed to

Caldwell basically (and maybe purposely) completely contradicted Gene Smith on two specific points.  He said he's drafting for need, and said he thinks level of competition in college is important.  Two huge departures from Gene Smith's message through the years.

So, in other words, you just don't like hearing dissenting opinion. You and a few others would be perfectly happy here, as long as no one ever said anything negative about the team. Thats pretty much it. Deny it all you want, but I'm not the only one that gets flack here - its ANYone that brings up team issues and gives criticism.. Even when "new" posters come here and criticize they get bashed. So you can't say that its about any negative "reputation" either.
