ESPN's John Clayton on the Jaguars & Raiders in FA

#21

Quote:Excellent point.

I would counter by indicating that the quality of players in this draft seems to be better than it has been in years past.

You draft in the hopes of getting a dominant player, or at least a contributor over several seasons.

Barring injury or a dramatic drop in motivation, Suh can be a dominant player.

Several other players are in their prime, appear to be scheme fits, need fits, and have the talent to upgrade our team.

If there is a year to substitute FA for the draft, this is it.

Yeah I wouldn't always rely on FA, because most years you can only bring in a Zane Beadles. This year's FA is like a perfect storm of us having the cap space and talented guys in their prime actually being available.

We need to think of this as a "reset" for the failed drafts of our past. We still gotta do well in the draft, but loading up with guys in the 24-27 age range just getting their 2nd contracts can do wonders for turning this franchise around.

I think the Jags will at least try to sign two "big" FA deals.  (in my mind that means more than 7 million per year given the current market)

I hope they can make it happen.  It'll go a long way to getting closer to that 89% figure and it could potentially really help the team.

Clayton seems to have some inflated $ figures compared to what I've seen elsewhere in that piece, but I reckon that's just typical ESPN hype-machine at it's finest.

I'd be happy if they sign suh and do what they previously have done. Guys like marks, hood, ball etc

I agree. I think I'd be ecstatic if we can bring in two "big names", one solid starter, and one or two "show me" type deals like Marks/Ball.

Haha.  What are you all feisty about?

Rolle is a rapidly aging ghost of his former self.  I'd love to have the Antrel Rolle of 5 years ago at FS, but I wouldn't sign the current version.

Im all for McCourty. I dont think the jags can get him and suh though. I always like a good veteran in the secondary. Rolle would be relatively cheap and still has something to offer a squad. And he plays his [BLEEP] off. Instant upgrade for a couple pf seasons if they can't get DM.

Here's where the Idzik hire comes into sharper focus though. Provided that Dave trusts the man, it's possible for the team to carry out legitimate, front line negotiations in a two-at-a-time manner.

Having two people in the Org that have experience with negotiations makes landing more than one upper tier Free Agent that much more likely.
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!
