Utilize Ace as a receiver

#21

Quote:As a punt returner Ace has been less than stellar but when he's on the field as a receiver he finds ways to get open, go up and make the catch and just make plays. He was thrown to the wayside with the emergence of Hurns, Allen and Lee but I I hope they can find a place for him still.

Ace as a receiver? Haha, when you're a 5'7 receiver at this level you better be a "special" athlete, Ace is certainly not that. I wouldn't be surprised if he's out of the league in 2 years, he offers nothing as a punt returner and doesn't have the physical ability to win against bigger more athletic DB's.

His fate is probably related to Blackmon. If we get Blackmon back there is no room for Ace. If for some chance Blackmon doesnt come back, The way our receivers went down last year we may keep him around if the expanded roster goes through.

Tyler Lockett in the 4th round will take Ace's spot.

This is one of the worst picks Caldwell has made this far...

He's short and slow, what could he have possibly provided?

Ace to me in 2013 was someone who broke out somewhat into a WR, maybe slot WR. As we got some REAL WR like Robinson and Lee, there isn't room for Ace especially if Blackmon returns and if they sign one in free agency. Ace has been on a decline since his 2013 year because of all the competition, even as a PR he hasn't been so great. All of last season I wanted them to put Lee as the PR. Ace thrived in a weak 2013 WR line up.

I actually really like his skillset and what he brings to the table. I'm guessing there's a reason that stems from inside meeting rooms that is really why he didn't see much of any playing time last year. Perhaps he's not working hard or not grasping the playbook.

Geez I hope not.

Not to say Lockett sucks, but I think we need other needs.  There will be good value in this deep draft in round 4, we don't need another 5'8" receiver

He was obviously supposed to be a return threat - but he wasn't able to adapt to the pro game and get north and south effectively.  His sideline to sideline dance worked in college  -   not so much with the big boys.

He took a flier. If you go back and look at the entire 4th round of the 2013 draft its not like we missed out on anyone of significance.

David Bakthiari is the starting LT in GB. Alex Okafor is pretty good (8 sacks this year)

Bakthiari was meh:

Quote:Season stats (playoffs included): 18 starts (1,171 snaps; 96.3 percent of total offensive snaps); seven sacks allowed, 20 quarterback hurries allowed, nine penalties

ProFootballFocus.com season rating: minus-6.3 (No. 46 out of 79 among NFL offensive tackles this season; ranked last among Packers starting offensive linemen)

Okafor was in the same boat as Ace and was potentially a borderline camp cut last year:

Quote:ESPN Cardinals reporter Josh Weinfuss believes second-year OLB Alex Okafor "will be buried on the depth chart" and could be a late-camp cut.

It would be a precipitous fall for a player selected in the fourth round in the 2013 draft. Okafor was never a special athlete, but is long at 6-foot-5 and has strong hands. If Okafor does manage to stick around, he will contribute on special teams and as a situational pass rusher.

Ace as a 5th WR who can get 2-4 touches per game in space would be useful to this team. He doesnt need to be the lead slot guy. But his quickness and short burst acceleration can be valuable when used creatively. Something Fisch showed he is incapable of doing.

Those are exactly the measurables of the prototype punt returner. Don't you remember how Chad Owens revolutionized the position for the Jags?

I agree.

A 5th anything needs to make a positive contribution to ST. Since he can't return punts, can he tackle or block?

I'm pulling for Ace. He flashed like a legit speedster his rookie year.

The suspension hurt his stock, but I'm still a fan of his potential

Agreed. That suspension really did hurt him.

Fair point. I think he is still a decent little piece though.

I love Ace. But I don't see a scenario where he makes the final roster unless he really plays out of his mind in camp. I expect some additions to the WR corps this offseason. Ace did zip last year.
Only a chump boos the home team!

Not to mention the fumbles.
