Bills Trade for Matt Cassel

#21

Looks like they get Cassel and a 6th (2015); while the Vikings get a 5th (2015) and a 7th (2016).

GO JAGS!!

Quote:The last 4 years Cassel has thrown more picks than touchdowns. I'm not getting why teams like this guy.

If Matt Cassel has a decent team around him, he'll be fine.  2012 KC season wasn't all on him.  He can be a stop gap until they find their QB in the case he does start.   He's better than Henne.

I agree.  I'm no fan of Cassel or trading any picks to get him -  but with Rex and company sure to focus on running the ball, they could still win some games with Cassel at the helm.

Quote:For what?!

How desperate are they for a QB?!

Where were you when Kyle Orton retired? Of course they need a quarterback now that he is gone.

From the standpoint of trade compensation,  the Bills didn't pay much for Matt Cassel.    The part of the trade that I don't like from a Bills standpoint is Cassel is due $ 4.75 million on his 2015 contract.

It will be interesting to see if the Vikings are looking to re-sign Christian Ponder or go with totally different QB's behind Teddy Bridgewater.

I agree with you that the Bills can win some games with Matt Cassel.   In some games,  he looks like a pretty good QB.   The problem is there are too many games that Cassel will be the # 1 reason why his team loses the game.   One thing Matt Cassel isn't is a model of consistency.   The word erratic comes to mind when reflecting on Cassel as an NFL QB.

I believe Bullseye and MANY other people feel the Bills still need a quarterback.

All of those people are right. The article I read says they want a guy who can be E.J. Manuel's teacher. In other words, it is obvious Manuel should not be a starter, but has potential to get better.

That might be the case but paying $ 4.75 million in 2015 is an expensive way in hiring a teacher.

I don't remember anyone saying the Bills are very smart. They had made some head-scratching decisions before.

One thing that I think is safe to say is the Bills have a slim chance at best of finding their QB of the future in 2015.  As long as Tom Brady still has the physical ability to play at a high level,  it's hard to envision any team in the AFC East overtaking the Patriots.

It is not just Tom Brady. The year he tore knee ligaments, Matt Cassel led the Patriots to an 11-5 record - good enough to win the division if only two losses were not to the Dolphins. Miami won both games because New England could not figure out the wildcat play.

New England had one of the most advantageous schedules that season.   That very likely contributed to them winning 11 games,  despite Tom Brady going down for the count in Game # 1.

In a typical season,  the difference between Tom Brady and the other AFC East QB's has been off the charts.   I don't think it's going to be much different in 2015.

That explains why after moving to the AFC West, one of the toughest divisions, Matt Cassel was not as successful as he was in 2008. Changing teams was necessary to show he is just an average quarterback.

The Patriots coaching,  talent,  and their 2008 schedule certainly made Matt Cassel look better than he really was.

No doubt about it. He never started a game in college. I remember reading New England's worst enemy in Super Bowl 42 (before the game, of course) was Matt Cassel because seeing him would have meant Tom Brady got hurt.

Now that Cassel is in Buffalo, he is going to play against his former team twice a year. It also means Jaguars fans have to hope he sucks for at least one week.
