Is Richard Sherman really the best CB/SS in the NFL?

#1

Sherman prides himself as being the best CB in the league today, but when compared to other greats like Deion Sanders, Ronnie Lott, Ed Reed, John Lynch, Rod Woodson, Lem Barney, and so many others; would you say that he is better than any of them? Would he have been able to shut down WR's like Jerry Rice, Cris Carter, Steve Largent, Randy Moss, and Terrell Owens in their primes?

This is actually a very interesting question IMO.

Cornerback/strong safety? Or am I reading that wrong?

If the question is whether or not he's the best cornerback in the NFL right now, my vote is yes.

Dude what?

Deion was a corner back. Lott, Reed, Lynch and Woodson were safeties. You do know that right?

There's a huge difference between corner back and strong safety.

Sherman actually has played SS, though not quite as often.

That does not make him a CB/SS unless he plays SS on a regular basis.

A lot of people are not going to vote because they know he is just a cornerback.

Yeah, but he never had to worry about throwing at Revis.

Except when Revis was on the NYJ roster.
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

A few seasons ago,  then Packers CB Charles Woodson was playing at a level at or higher than the level that Richard Sherman is currently at.

Charles Woodson certainly will be a HOFer and Richard Sherman is on that track.

Over the years,  there have been many great NFL CB's.  Including some mentioned in this thread,    Lem Barney,  who played in my youth days on my favorite team,  was one of my all time favorite players at any position.   Others such as Dick ' Night Train Lane' ,  Mel Blount,  Mel Renfro,  and Darrell Green come to mind as all time greats..  Night Train Lane was before my time as an NFL fan but many who saw him play still consider him the best they have seen.     One can make a solid case for a number of CB's being at or near the best of all-time.  So much depends on the rules of their time,  the Defensive scheme,  and the competition they faced.

I disagree with that. Woodson was a great ballhawking corner during his early years in Green Bay, but he wasn't the shutdown corner that Sherman is right now.

Surprised Deion's name hasn't come up yet. In his prime, Prime Time was one of the best to play the game.

Like so many football comparisons,  it's subjective.  I thought Charles Woodson played on a very high level for a number of seasons for the Packers.  Much like with Richard Sherman today,  if you threw the ball in his vicinity,   the likelihood of a bad outcome was high.    As much of a playmaker Sherman is today,  I would rank Charles Woodson as the best playmaking CB of the early part of the 21st Century.

That's definitely true.

Having watched so much of Woodson during his tenure in Green Bay, I'd agree with him as the best playmaker at corner in the last decade. However, I think Sherman's playing making ability is great as well and can even be amplified considering how little he is actually thrown at. For Richard Sherman to have 24 interceptions in his four year career despite only being thrown at roughly once every 14 snaps is pretty incredible. That is far and away the most interceptions over that period of time with second place having 15 interceptions. I'd argue he's been the second best shutdown corner in the past decade, only behind Asomugha's ridiculous 3-4 year stretch with Oakland, and the best playmaking corner currently in the NFL.

The best. Corner anyways.
