I'm just saying that Haynesworth = Suh, but keep in mind that Albert didn't get the fat and lazy moniker until after he signed his $100 million dollar contract.  Just saying that the FO needs to dedicate a lot of time to making sure he's the perfect fit with the Jaguars.

 

 

That's not true.  Haynesworth had that reputation when he came into the league.  That's one of the reasons the Jaguars selected John Henderson in that same draft instead of taking the more highly touted Haynesworth.

 

I'm fairly certain this front office will do their due diligence in properly vetting every player they're considering in free agency.  That's what they're being paid to do.

 

In no universe is Haynesworth = Suh in any way other than the position they play.

Haynesworth also had plenty of trouble off the field. Suh is a player he toes the line when it comes to sportsmanship. The two aren't comparable. Suh isn't an off field headache.

 

Suh's only problem is playing in the wrong era. Had he played in the 80's or prior he would have fit right in and no one would of said anything. Some of those old school guys make him look tame. My favorite, Butkus, Nitschke, LT, Alzado, Tatum, Dobler, Lambert, Deacon Jones. Man those were some mean, nasty, want to rip your head off guys that I love! Heck, even the 90's Suh could of been ok for the most part. I love Suh and how he plays, he plays mean, with an attitude, she it costs him/and team sometimes, but no one can question his desire to win and get after it.

Suh may be a headline grabbing acquisition if it happens, but it's also representative of a massive upgrade to the defensive line.  He's arguably one of the best defensive linemen in the game today.  Haynesworth doesn't come even remotely close, and was a problem long before he hit free agency or even entered the league.  Comparing him to Suh is like putting a Corvette up against a Chevette. 

The "sad" thing (good as a Jaguars fan) about Haynesworth is that he could have been one of the all time greats.

 

When he was on, like his first ever playoff run, he was unblockable.  But for whatever reason, he didn't seem to have the motor to be consistently dominant.

 

By all accounts, Suh doesn't have that issue at all.

Butkus was a special sort of crazy that definitely helped his play on the field. Love hearing the old films of him in interviews, and old game film. "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" is one of his favorite films. I still have the old NFL Films where he says he liked it when that head came rolling down the stairs. Said it with a psychotic looking grin. He liked to project those things happening on the field, and not to him. My kind of player. And guess what.....Players could/can think that way and guess what, it won't actually happen. People today get all concerned and freaked out.

There are arguments for both propositions.

 

It is rare a player of Suh's caliber hits the open market.  In addition, there are a lot of guys that can help the Jaguars, including Bulaga, Thomas, McCourty.

 

However, the team has also given indication it will be active in free agency.

 

For the longest time, that wasn't the case.  As a result, I think Jaguars fans became conditioned to think the team would not be active in free agency, and players the fans might have considered for the Jaguars were considered out of reach for the Jaguars.

 

I am thinking this team could use a Reggie White type signing.

 

Not only a guy in his prime who is a dominant presence on the field, but a guy whose signing would signal to the league that Jacksonville is no longer the NFL's version of Siberia...the place where careers go to die.

What I DON'T want to see is the team settling for 3rd-6th best players at the positions they fill ... again. The Jags need to sign a couple of top talents. We have enough cap room to sign ALL of the top free agents at the positions we need. I don't expect every one to choose the Jags, but I'd be discouraged if Caldwell didn't get two top free agents from among Suh, Thomas, McCourty, Bulaga and Cobb.

After FA, most fans will be saying one of two things depending on what happens. It will either be something along the lines of, "I can't believe that the best free agent we signed was Joe Barksdale. Fire his [BLEEP] now." Or it will be something along the lines of, "Wow, we got such and such and who and who, watch out Colts because we are taking the division."

 

Either fans will be really happy at the signings and expect the division, or pissed at the lack of quality signings and begin the clock to his firing. Odds of middle ground, not very high.

To me, there is a clear difference between Suh and the rest of the guys.

 

Guys like Cobb and McCourty hit free agency every year.

 

Suh, a guy that will become a HOF player barring injury, is rarely available.  

 

He may not even consider us as an option, but we need to make sure he turns us down as the best deal money-wise.

Suh and McCourty are the headliners of this FA period in my mind for the Jags.  

 

Suh - because guys that good are rarely available.  And we may be thin there early on as Marks finishes rehabilitation on the knee.  It's far from a great need - but it's a great opportunity to sign a rare talent. 

 

McCourty because he'd make an immediate and meaningful impact since  he'd play the position that's currently the  weakest in our secondary - maybe the entire defense. 

 

After those two - it comes down to how much you want to pay a RT or veteran receiver?  We'll see.

 

 On the OTTO front - your guess is as good as mine as to how Caldwell plans to address it.  Maybe a mid tier guy in FA and a draft pick to battle it out in camp. Maybe Jason Worilds. Who knows.

McCourty re-signing with New England illustrates, from the negative perspective, the point I made in my initial post that the free agent signings would be a reflection on the outside perception of the Jaguars.

 

The difference between the Jaguars offer and the Patriots was less than the difference (real or perceived) between the Patriots as World Champions and the Jaguars status as non contenders.

 

For those players who value immediate winning/contention more strongly than money and building for the future, the Jaguars status as bottom dwellers for so long tipped the scales away from Jacksonville.

 

It is my deepest hope at this stage that Julius Thomas is a Jaguar.  Ditto with Murray.

 

But given the disparate cap room between Jacksonville and Seattle and Dallas, if Thomas and Murray sign with Seattle and Dallas respectively, I think it's because they perceive Jacksonville as still being too far away from contention to make it not worth the difference in contracts.

 

I guess from that perspective, Gene Smith still deserves some blame.

But I said before... if I'm an NFL player... if Oakland offers me 15 mil a year and GB offers me 12, I'm taking the 10.


More money wins out when all else is equal.

Can't fault anyone for thinking that way. Some guys go for the money because the hometown discount is too far away.... I.E. Oakland offers 20 mil a year and GB offers 10... Rodgers or no... you kinda HAVE to take that extra ched.

 

When J-Ville is winning often enough though, we won't really have a need (hopefully) for all these superstar free agents....
