Jaguars re-sign Tyson Alualu, 2 year deal

Seriously though, as long as they don't intend for the man to actually start a game, I guess it's not so bad to have a $3 mil per year bench warmer.

Our d line is loaded with mediocre guys making good that range. Ziggy Hood, Red Bryant too.

Good resigning.

Quote:He had a much better than expected season last year, stat-wise.... I don't get all the hate.

How do you figure? He's never had as few tackles in a season as he had last year with 30, and his 2 sacks on the year is his second lowest only topping last year's total of 1.5. He's never had over 3.5. Typically he gets 1 pass defensed, but he never even had that last year, and he's never had an INT. When it comes to big plays, his career total is 1 forced fumble, and again that wasn't last year. So how is personal worst in terms of stats considered "better than expected"? If that's the case then we have a serious problem with expectations.

Solid price for a decent rotational player. Good deal.

6 Million for two years with 4.25 guaranteed? Not much for a solid backup and rotational guy. Bad draft pick at #10, good signing for those terms.

Playing 5 tech is more about clogging lanes and stopping the run. Not rushing the passer. Look and Red Bryant's stats.

It looks like they made the salary due on the option year a signing or roster bonus.

He's a solid rotational guy.

It's also important to look at playing time, he had started every game in his first four seasons here. Last season he was playing as a backup in a rotational role. 30 tackles and 2.0 sacks for a backup 5-tech isn't bad.

His contract pretty much guaranteed him getting the 4.25 mil this year. You can kind of look at the new contract as an extention for 1 more season at 1.75 mil.

That's not always true in regards to 5-techs as other teams use them to pass rush more, but I'll agree that the position in Jacksonville is not quite as flashy. Still, the claim was that he improved statistically. How does one argue that?

PFT had him ranked in their top 100 Free Agents this year. Had him at 53.

But he opted out of his final year so nothing was guaranteed, right?

PFF said that he had his best score in run defense during the 2014 season. You, I know fact certain, are smarter than the position you are taking here. Yes, he should have never been drafted as a #10. But he is an effective 5-technique player in this defense. And this defense (as most do, this day and age) trys to rotate a lot of players into the big bodies on the D-line. Which would kill your stats.

Just a broke-down old college OT...

Returning to JAX on a 2yr deal per @AdamSchefter, former #10 pick Tyson Alualu earned the best run D grade of his career in 2014.

I don't think we should be discouraged about free agency just yet. Players like Cobb, Suh, J.Thomas usually wait until late free agency to agree with a team to gain leverage.

Looking at how the contract was structured, it appears there was mutual understanding standing in regards to the opt out.

Alualu knew he likely wasn't getting 4.25 mil guaranteed on the open market. He wouldn't have opted out unless he knew the jags were going to take care of him.

You're right. I'm really not disgusted with the signing or his stats. I just don't see the signing as anything to get excited about, and that $6 mil over two years struck me as rather lucrative for an average backup DL. Then again, he's been overpaid since he came to Jacksonville due to his draft status.
