WR at 3?

But I also think they know he'll probably be gone. Since you can't be 100% sure you will be able to trade out, I'm not so sure they know what they will do if he's gone and trading isn't an option. The only obvious choice I see is Williams. If he's not there, I see several options that are equally appealing... but with trading out being the better of them all. Difficult scenario to prepare for.

Quote:If we snag Greg Hardy it's pretty much a done deal we go WR. What if they want Beasley or Fowler at Otto? I say get Sammy Coates at 36 if we go Fowler at 3. I think NE will get him at 32 anyway. Sammy Coates Quote:I think they know who they want.Williams could be the #1 on their board and you're right it is a difficult scenario to prep for, however only two people can be taken before us if we don't trade back so they likely have it mapped out who we want at 3.

I believe only 6 receivers have been selected in the Top 5 ever. (Blackmon, A.J. Green, Sammy Watkins, Braylon Edwards, Larry Fitzgerald, and Calvin Johnson) and only 3 of those were in the Top 3.
If a receiver is on the level of AJ. Green/Larry Fitzgerald/Calvin Johnson, then they'd probably be worth the Top 3 pick. I think they'd have to be that level for Caldwell to consider picking a WR. Especially given that we took two WR's in the draft last year. Honestly, I just hope a great defensive player drops to us. Get a nice young star on defense while the offense grows together.
I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

We wouldn't be drafting an OTTO at #3 anyway. IMO, they'd like Williams, trade, LEO or Cooper. In that order, with anything beyond trading out being a toss-up. There's no clear "must get" player IMO.

Quote:I don't expect it, but if David Caldwell views a guy like Kevin White as a "Julio Jones" type talent, then yea I can see him pulling the trigger on a receiver at 3. The Jaguars brass will do whatever it takes to give Blake Bortles the best opportunity to succeed, with that said I fully expect the Jags to select the BAP edge rusher as I don't believe there are any "Julio Jones" type talents in this draft class. What were Julio's measurables out of college vs. Kevin White's and Sammy Watkins's last year?

I think the Jags are interviewing a number of top players, as it is smart especially if they receive a trade down deal, and its good to have material in their files should the player become a free agent down the road. I think in Amari Cooper's case, Caldwell wants to by well-versed in the prospect if suddenly he is picking number 5-10, instead of at 3.
Although I don't believe Caldwell will use his pick 3 in the 1st round on a WR, his free agency aggressive attempt to sign Randall Cobb (and not signing anyone meaningful at WR since then), gives the notion of him taking a WR more feasible than before. If he believes one of these prospects in the draft to be a possible premiere edge rusher, I don't see him passing on that player. Clemons is an aging and declining patch, and Branch has been an inconsistent backup and susceptible to injury (especially with the multiple groin injuries).
Looked at the highlight tapes on White and Cooper. I would take either of them, and either would be the best WR on the team that's not on the commissioner list. White has an insane catching radius; Cooper is so smooth and good after the catch.

I think you have to factor in the relative value of the position. Pass rusher is probably the second most important position on the team behind quarterback.
BPA please, whoever that may be. Either direction we go in, lets not bank on Justin Blackmon returning to form. Its a nice surprise if he does, but his possible return should not affect draft planning.
I'm one of the bigger Cooper fans, but now that Julius has come to town, im not sure we would be able to utilize cooper significantly enough to justify drafting him over other needs. Think about it: assume 500 attempts for Bortles with an improved 60% completion percentage = 300 completions RBs: 60 catches TEs: 80 catches WR: Hurns = 40, Robinson = 60, Lee = 50 There's 290 catches right there. Not taking into account CS3 or Ace. Can we honestly fit another #1 guy in there? Sure there will be injuries, but is that enough to feed a #1 like cooper? I think it might be best to draft a specific WR that fits our offense- a guy like Tyler Lockett- to replace Ace and fill KR duties. That in addition to giving him 20-30 receptions a season in a Golden Tate kinda role. I think he plays well enough to merit much more touches as our offense progresses. EDIT: Lockett in round 3. This also frees up our ability to go get a stud defensive player like Beasley with our #3 pick.
Quote:What were Julio's measurables out of college vs. Kevin White's and Sammy Watkins's last year? Kevin Whites are actually on par with Julios, the more I watch that kid the more impressed I am, I think he's the best receiver prospect since Julio Jones/AJ Green, and wouldn't be surprised if the Jags selected him at 3.
When building a franchise, I've always heard the first building blocks are to get your QB, protect your QB, and attack the opposing QB. If both an edge rush and wide receiver are considered needs, this sentiment would indicate to rush the opposing QB is the higher priority to get in place.

Beckham did just fine last year and he barely makes 6'0". Height is nice but isn't a huge factor for the most part. |
