Chris Borland retiring

Wow, this thread is one of the worst I've ever read and that's saying a lot.
Oh trust me bro, I am calm. Nothing on a computer screen is going to get me worked up.
A guy retiring and putting long term health over money is not an example of the wussification of America. An example of that would be parents not being able to discipline their children without fear of it being construed as abuse. Or the thousands of teens who sue their parents and win. Quote:Extremely likely in that he most likely won't have played so badly that he's played himself out of the league in 2 years. If he plays like he did last year he would probably get a contract north of 30 million over 4 years. If he regresses he's still looking at a contract at least similar to what JT Thomas got at 3 years 10 million. “Motivation alone is not enough. If you have an idiot and you motivate him,now you have a motivated idiot.” Jim Rohn
Do some people really care/worry about stuff like "the wussification of America"? Who cares how "manly" people are, what does it matter to you? I don't get it.
If this guy think he can support his family in another way without putting his long term health at risk it's his decision and I don't see why anyone would feel the need to criticize it. Quote:Yes, how could anyone be so dense? I'm more speaking of your attitude to this whole situation...pretty moronic. ![]() We show less advertisements to registered users. Quote:Oh trust me bro, I am calm. Nothing on a computer screen is going to get me worked up. Well, we agree in regards to those other two examples for sure. I feel like that if you agree with and applaud Chris Borland, then that's a serious indictment on the game of football. Agreeing with him is essentially stating that football is inherently too dangerous of a game for even adults to play. If this game is too dangerous for even a healthy, athletic, and well-oiled, young athlete then who should play it? Agreeing with him is one step towards fundamentally changing football or possibly banning it. Quote:Well, if I had the ability, I know I certainly wouldn't quit on my team when I was needed most. Unless he has another job that will pay him millions, he should absolutely man up and quit being such a wuss.Maybe he values quality of life over money. You know money isn't everything to some people. I'm pretty sure he didn't wake up yesterday and decide "I'm going to retire" without putting any thought in his decision-making. Maybe he would rather make it to 40 as a man with no issues with memory loss, healthy knees, the abilty to play with his kids and an otherwise clean bill of health vs being a 40 year old man who could barely walk, on numerous medications, and unable to remember what he had for dinner last night with "millions" in the bank. I bet if you would ask any regular Joe currently sitting in Baptist Medical being told that they have some form of terminal illness if they would they rather have a clean bill of health or "millions" in the bank the vast majority would rather have their health.

Quote:Do some people really care/worry about stuff like "the wussification of America"? Who cares how "manly" people are, what does it matter to you? I don't get it. Because if I want my kid to play football, he should be able to do so. If I want to give my kid a spanking because he was disrespectful, I should be able to do so.

Quote:Because if I want my kid to play football, he should be able to do so. If I want to give my kid a spanking because he was disrespectful, I should be able to do so. And nobody is stopping your kid playing football. Football is a dangerous sport, you can't argue with that. The amount of head injuries is incredible for me to see as somebody who didn't grow up with the sport and soccer as a national sport here which very very rarely has head injuries.
Quote:Maybe he values quality of life over money. You know money isn't everything to some people. I'm pretty sure he didn't wake up yesterday and decide "I'm going to retire" without putting any thought in his decision-making. That's the thing. There were no indications he was going to have any long-term health problems. He consulted with researchers and after learning that he has a higher risk of developing long-term injuries, he quit. The vast majority of former players are healthy and living normal lives - you only hear about the horror stories. Quote:Because I'm not afraid to go against the grain and conform to the flock's opinion that he is a brave pioneer? Oh yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking. ...or something. ![]()
Quote:And nobody is stopping your kid playing football. Not now. In the future it may be decided football is too dangerous for children to play. That is part of the wussification of America. And that classifies him as a wuss for being proactive after the medical experts advised him he's at higher risk vs others?

We are Jaguars.
Quote:And that classifies him as a wuss for being proactive after the medical experts advised him he's at higher risk vs others? Air traffic controllers are at an incredibly higher risk for suicide. Life inherently has risks. If you are so risk-adverse that you "proactively" avoid some risk, then you are a wuss. Yes.
Quote:Actually, more concussions happen in soccer than any other sport.Football is the most common sport with concussion risk for males (75% chance for concussion) Soccer is the most common sport with concussion risk for females (50% chance for concussion) And honestly, I was a season ticket holder for 5 years at my local soccer club, they play 46 (23 at home) games a season and I can count on one hands how many players I've seen with head injuries in that 110+ games. I'm sure some of that is to do with the NFL having a better policy on handling concussions though. |
