Holy crap that is awful. 7.7 3 cone?! Ryan Davis mode engaged don't put him anywhere near the edge of my defense.

 

Actually, I reeeeealy hope his injury played a big part in that, cause as I've said all along he didn't show athleticism outside of his good first step...but that's way worse than even I expected. 

 

also for what its worth, shane ray's numbers up there are pretty similar to chris clemons' were at his combine with the note that ray is an inch shorter and weighed about 12lbs more at the time.

So his measureables are similar to an Undrafted rookie free agent that is Chris Clemons.  Clemons overcame his lack of size and elite athleticism, so of course it's possible - but I see Ray sliding down significantly in the draft.  Maybe late 1st rounder now?

Beasley imo falls short purely as a football player compared to Fowler and Gregory. To me he looks lost and lacks the instincts of the other two. He also cannot set the edge and is a complete non-factor in the run game.


I also like how violent Gregory and Fowler are when they are not just hitting the QB. With them, nobody is safe and I love it.

 

Our run d is fine. What puts us in really hot water is that our leading pass rusher is 34. Hence our dire need for an outside rusher- where beasley and gregory are most valuable.

 

I also really disagree with your assessment on Beasley's impact in the run game. He had a ton of TFL.

there are examples that go both ways, but i thought it was interesting to compare ray to the guy who he could potentially replace.

I still think he's an ideal Leo, and that the Falcons are eying him at #7. I doubt that's changed. Should the Falcons pass on him then maybe he falls out of the top 10, but I doubt he falls out of the top 15 unless someone picks Bud Dupree over him.

Agreed. Gregory's potential is just too much to pass up on and fits our system perfectly. I will be happy with Fowler too though.

shane ray is really similar to two guys that have played the position for years in this scheme, bruce irvin and chris clemons. 

 

i understand the extra height that gregory has would only be a plus, but gregory is not good in the run game at all, ray shows that he can beat double teams and go inside or outside, he can shed blocks. gregory gets stood up all the time. thats my problem with gregory.

I think we have to stop this notion of finding an ideal LEO or FS or OTTO or whatever.  At some point - if you think Gregory can do more things better than Ray, AND is more scheme versatile, you draft Gregory.  That's why a prospect like Williams is so valuable.  If the coaching staff gets fired, they will have no trouble plugging Williams on any defensive line.

 

If Gus and co. get fired, and we have a 6'2", 250" DE called a LEO .... that may not be the type of player we need.   I'm OK with them trying to get a tweener later that they convert to DE, but drafting a small guy like that with poor athleticism is murder

 

I think it's worth considering.

2. Irvin is not even remotely similar to Irvin. Irvin utterly destroys and embarrasses Ray as an athlete. One of the worst possible players you could comp Ray to honestly.

 

3. I am pretty sure we already proved on the page previously that Ray has not shown that he can win outside unless it is an extreme passing situation, in which case even someone like Andre Branch can win.

The site has him compared to Chris Clemons as a LEO role, and with a majority of the sacks only occuring in Blitz situations it wouldnt totaly shock us if a LEO player was drafted.


I think a shocking pick like WR A. Cooper at #3 will occur.

With guys drafted on potential, you like to see them get better. Gregory just can't get off blocks. He's athletic but gets stoned all the time. Im really not sure he is gonna be any better than branch.

Looking back on this now. What a hilarious way to describe Gregory.
