I don't think it'll impact ticket sales. That has already been impacted. People who enjoy the game day experience will continue to do so and those that don't or can't because of money will do the same.

I think you are exactly right. Plus, blackouts were becoming a thing of the past. Owners like Khan made a business decision that buying up non-purchased tickets was a wise business move. They want the games on tv.

 

And the owners aren't stupid. They could see which way the wind was blowing in Congress. Congress was not going to allow the blackout rule for much longer. Not when so much taxpayer funds go into paying for new stadia. Not if the NFL wants to retain their anti-trust exemption.

 

The bigger deal is the Jaguars-Bills streaming-only status. Ten years from now that will be looked at as the beginning of a big change in how games are delivered to fans.

The NFL took a good thing from last year, basically waking up and watching a game at 9:30, and changing it so that people wont actually watch it now.

I don't think this will dramatically affect ticket sales for the Jags. Maybe 5 years ago when blackouts were the norm and people needed to buy tickets to ensure that they would see the game. IMO, the culture of ticket-buying has changed since Khan has taken over. The people that come out to games now, do so because they want to be there.

Yeah I don't like that at all, I thought it was cool when they said it'll be the first game streamed online to the world, but not on TV is a pretty big blow. To me that sucks it's supposed to be a nationally televised game that was the whole selling point of sending a game to London more exposure.

It's an interesting option the league has decided to go with for this game.  It makes sense to use this as a pilot for streaming games online legally to get a sense for how much interest there might be, and to determine how well they can handle the required bandwidth and other technology required to pull this off.  Will it be a big draw?  Probably not, but the novelty of watching a game online will probably give it a broader audience than a normally televised game between Buffalo and Jacksonville might.

When you look at the maps it wasn't really aired in that many markets, especially considering it was the Cowpies and the Niners.  In a sense I think they were national games, but they still look more like regional games.

This is a great game to test the waters, not like Jax/Buffalo are in high demand.

I agree with you. It was pretty cool getting up and there was an NFL game right on TV. NFL fans didn't even have to get out of bed if they didn't want to, they could just lay there and watch NFL football.

 

I know they can still do that with their laptops, but it's just not the same, besides fans with TVs in their bedrooms, I'm sure most of those bedroom TV screens are much bigger then those laptop screens.

 

There's not going to be any charge to watch the Jags/Bills streaming NFL game right?

A disappointing aspect of the decision for me is I enjoy watching NFL games on Direct TV with the TIVO feature.  This way,  during the game I can go back to look at a play as many times as I want.   During the game,  it's much more difficult to do this with Online Streaming.

Oh I just thought he was talking about the Jags games. You're right a lot of people more than likely won't go out of their way to see it, but what it does is provides a good test subject for the NFL.

 

Those who are in the home markets, who likely will make up a large portion of the viewers regardless of how the game is shown, will still get it on their televisions which help mitigate the losses from an advertising standpoint.  It'll also effectively mark out a large portion of the viewers from the test, those outliers who are interested enough to actually watch it from their computers will provide a good metric on the viability for such a service when they see the demand for it on their servers.  

 

It's actually a smart move because a more marquee team may skew the numbers.
