But I think he's capable of being a solid 2:1 or sometimes 3:1 TD/INT ratio type of QB that flirts with 4,000 yards passing each year. As long as Robinson, Lee, and Hurns can stay healthy I think this group will be efficient enough.

I think this prediction (with a 2:1 ratio) is realistic for his 2nd and 3rd year. He's a big play QB who can surprise defenses and is hard to gameplan for, and he will be relied on enough to carry the offense that he could easily post 3500-4000 yards on volume alone. But he'll lose the mental battle from time to time at this point in his career because he doesn't yet know what to expect from pro defenses (not everyone is Andrew Luck and walks into the league knowing how to read the defense at the line and pre-plan the play down to your third or fourth option.)


Then after that anything can happen. He has the drive to become a cleaner QB but he also has a lot of bad habits and not everyone learns how to correct the kinds of problems he has, so it's just dependent on how much that is cleaned up whether or not he ascends.

The main legitimate concern of mine is that if Bortles doesn't fix those mechanics, we may have a Kaepernick type situation come year 4, where we're gonna have to overpay him to resign him, despite the fact that he's kind of plateaued and opposing teams are getting better at attacking his weaknesses.


But I believe in him, because he knows this is a very possible outcome as well as any of us, and that's why he's in Cali right now working on it.

I always got the sense that Culpepper's career was cut short because of his conditioning. He seemed to be out of shape and it impacted his play after the knee injury in 2005.

I got the sense part of it was due to conditioning, but part of it was due to him acting as his own agent and alienating the Vikings and other teams in contract deals.

 

I dunno.  Either way it was odd that his career was as short as it was.

Freeman was a dunce who couldn't learn the NFL game.  Bortles is anything but.

 

He's got the gunslinger mentality of Favre for sure.  Luck throws his share of picks he shouldn't, too... so I see a bit of that as well.

I'm not trying to knock him too much, but he did have a pretty ideal situation with the offensive weapons around him in Minnesota.  A lot of pitch and fetch to some extremely talented receivers.

 

2000 was his only winning season.  Every other was .500 or worse.  I remember their defense being pretty good, too... so not sure what the issue was with winning.
