Free Safety-What happened?

Quote:I actually like Matt Miller and he's gives great insight on Twitter, but Randall to Mathieu is so bad. I'm starting to wonder if Randall has some serious dirt on some of these analysts and trying to blackmail them. I'm not being serious but can't understand how some people have a 2nd rd grade on him.

Watch his USC game. That started the "hype" from me

@nfldraftscout: I'm 5 free safeties in and each one has a negative in TACKLING. Not a great year for hitters.

Holliman and Randall are definitely on that list.

Quote:Just been watching highlights from all the FS candidates and the one that still stands out for me is Chris Hackett.

Most of the others can be seen picking off loose passes and retuning them up the field. But Hackett just seems more physical and able to make something out of nothing.

I've posted it before, but take a look at this...

A couple of the INTs were just bad passes, but I do love the effort, those dives and pass breakups are nice. Seems to have good tackling form leading with his shoulder on that hit at the beginning of the video.

I love the goal-line hit about one minute in.

Yeah that's the one I was talking about. The closest we've had to that was Telvin's hit on Andre Johnson that drew a terrible penalty.

Rollins is one of the more interesting players in the draft this year. I do not know much about him other than what I have read but I have seen some draft guys rave about him.

I've heard Rollins would be a "natural" to convert over to FS. Admittedly I don't know much about him though

This Randall love as being physical is getting out of control. He might be the least physical player I have seen in a long time.

I'm also on the Quinton Rollins bandwagon as our 2nd round pick. He may need some time to work his way into the starting lineup due to limited football experience, but his upside looks great. Only problem is that some team may snag him at the end of the first round.

I agree. He possesses very good instincts for only playing collegiate football for only one year. I can see him developing nicely in our system.

I don't see a team taking him in the first round this year so he will be there for us at 36.

I've not seen that anywhere but on other boards. Have you seen any reputable analysts say that?

It's an interesting prospect, but it seems like asking a lot to me. I wouldn't expect him to be ready to learn the center-field role well enough until year two in the NFL.

Playing corner you see and make plays on one half of the field primarily.  Learning to play the whole middle might take a minute for a guy that's so inexperienced.

Again, if you're basing your opinion on someone after one game there's a lot you're not going to get vs people who have seen the entire body of work.

Would you call him physical and a great tackler? Where do you see him going?

In my opinion if a player can play that bad then it it is a huge negative. Arguably the worst game I've ever seen somebody play. He also only started to rise of big boards because of his combine numbers along with his pro day. That's a recipe for disaster.

He's physical in the sense that he's a big hitter. He put on a handful of hard hits this season and caused a few fumbles in the process. He doesn't wrap up often enough though so his technique could definitely use some work.

I personally wouldn't draft him until the 4th as I view him as a project with high upside but can add immediate value on special teams. He has the range to play deep center field and the speed to play sideline to sideline. This is where he'll excel in. Someone just has to develop his technique.

Ok. I personally would not draft him but at least you said the fourth. Many analysts are pegging him early in the second which is crazy.

Also I'm not so sure he does have the range for single high. He doesn't play anywhere near his 4.4 speed on the field.

Its not just his value. All of the safeties values are being overinflated due to a weak draft class. Which is why I think we are looking at possibly converting a CB to play FS.
