Slot WR Targets

#41
(This post was last modified: 04-01-2015, 08:00 AM by Stigma.)

We all know that Dave Caldwell has something up his sleeve when it comes to this upcoming draft. Could it be a surprise move taking someone like Nelson Agholor - WR - USC - 6'1" 185 lbs - 4.44/40 speed and great route running with Pick 36? Agholor could return punts and kicks and push Marqise Lee as the teams deep threat, perhaps pushing Lee to the slot.

The guys at NFL.com rate him in the group of WRs like Rashad Greene of FSU, Tyler Lockett of K-State and like these two, they rate him strictly as a slot WR, and probably a best value at the top of Rd 3.

Frankly, I have no idea what Dave Caldwell will do during the three days of the draft and I suspect few do perhaps including Dave Caldwell himself.

Would be nice if Phillip Dorsett was there at 36

Phillip Dorsett | CLG

(April 1, 2015 9:58 PM EDT)

Miami (FL) WR Phillip Dorsett clocked forty times of 4.25 and 4.27 at the Hurricanes' Pro Day.

Seeing as Dorsett ran 4.33 on the Combine's "slow track," we already knew he was fast. Dorsett has drawn some T.Y. Hilton comparisons for his versatility, but also possess the ability to outrun coverage a la DeSean Jackson. He's only 5-foot-9, 185, a deficiency that figures to keep Dorsett out of day one.

I think our pick in the second is going to be right in his range. There is a chance he could be gone as a late first rounder. But if he is a there and a receiver is not the first pick, Dorsett could be ideal.

An alternative thought, Devin Funchess anyone ?

He's been played in the slot before and his size would create real problems.

Anybody know anything on Kenny Bell?

 4.42 - 40 time. 6'1" - 197 - out of Nebraska.  Kick return average of 25 yds.

Projected 4th or 5th round.  Will probably be there at #139 (our fifth rounder)

Bell can play in the slot and had a lot of big time vertical plays in college.

He definitely has some big time potential if he can get better at the underneath routes to set up the double move on the nfl level. He's also good at catching in traffic and going up and winning jump balls.

I'd take him the 5th. I could see him having a NFL career similar to Nate Washingtons

The Jaguars are very fortunate that there is so much depth at receiver in this draft. There should be an excellent slot receiver available in the 4th round and possibly the 5th. Hopefully the guy they like most is available in one of these rounds. There is no way I'd take a receiver prior to the 4th round due to greater need at other positions and the depth at receiver. Predicting what any team will do is almost impossible due to all the smokescreens, but if I had to predict the picks by round based on position selected, it would be the following:

Rd. 1- LEO or Leonard Williams

2- LEO (if Williams is 1st pick) or safety

       3- Running Back

       4- Slot receiver

5-7  Depth at offensive line, linebacker and possibly a tight end if Lewis is not part of their plans.

He ran a 4.7 at the combine and killed his stock. Scouting websites say that he's too slow for WR and too small for TE. Not the kind of guy I'd spend a second (or even third) round pick on.

He improved that when he ran a 4.5 at his pro day and he's 6'4 tall. That's tall enough to cause mismatches as a slot receiver !

With the injury he suffered, he completely got lost in my radar. Only now that I saw the Jaguars video during his visit that I remembered that he's in the draft (that and I honestly haven't looked at a lot of the WRs given that it's not a huge need). I'm talking about GT receiver Deandre Smelter. Big talented kid with good speed, hands, and terrific competitor. This is a guy I'd love for us to take a chance on similar to how we landed Colvin last season.

Under Jerry's tutelage, I think this guy has potential to follow the footsteps of Megatron and Thomas as successful Tech WRs in the NFL.

Curious, anyone have any thoughts on ucf WR JJ Worton as a potential slot receiver? He was Blake's "go to" guy in 2013 when UCF went 12-1. JJ had the most catches of any receiver that year, not to mention the famous 1 hand grab in the end zone. He is currently recovering from an ACL tear, so there is not much mention of name. I would think if he could stay under the radar he will be great steal for us in he draft. Already has a great chemistry with Bortles.

Ranell Hall might be the better option if we're going the UCF route. He looked pretty good during senior bowl week as well.

I liked Funchess as a TE/slot before we signed Thomas.  Still like him at those roles, but I like Dorsett more now that TE is solved and we still have a need for slot/KR/PR, making him the more desirable pick.

There is so much depth at wide receiver that I hope the Jags wait til the 4th round to take this position. Hardy and Tre McBride would be very good picks as would the Georgia Tech receiver who came for a visit.
