When it comes to bad character players,  Lawrence Phillips is in rare company.

What a wasted talent and a trainwreck he was.  Picked 6 overall

<p class="">The Lawrence Phillips story gets worse each year. You have no idea how close the Jaguars came to picking him when I was covering that team.

Prisco also said that Coughlin compared Phillips to Jim Brown.

I always thought his talent was vastly overrated.

Worst to 1st.  Curse Reversed!

I think he was a great talent. He is also a psychopath.

He is also someone who was also coddled by Osborne at Nebraska. No matter what he did, he was still allowed to play on the team.

I still remember watching a video of Coughlin talking about almost picking him when he came out of college.  Thankfully he changed his mind.

Coughlin got lucky on a few of his picks. If I recall correctly in the 1998 draft he was poised to take Curtis Enis before Chicago took him. He ended up settling for Fred Taylor.

You are absolutely correct.  In fact he wanted to trade up for Curtis Enis (I wanted him to deal up for Woodson).  But it worked out great.  He drafted FT and DD with those two first rounders, and the rest is history.

Bizzare.  When I first read the story and saw the name Soward I thought of RJ but never thought they were related.

He's a bad man.  Last week, I borrowed a nickel from him.  He told me if I didn't pay him a dime by next week, he'd break my arm.

Wow, what a blast from the past.   We came <this close> to drafting Lawrence Phillips, and after sleeping on it overnight, Coughlin came to his senses and drafted Kevin Hardy.   At least, that was the official story.   The unofficial story was the Wayne Weaver told Coughlin not to draft Lawrence Phillips.
