Byron jones from UCONN is a guy to keep an eye on. He killed it at the combine and his tape is impressive as well. Only problem will be if he last until pick 36.

Wow. The Randall analysis is all over the place in this thread.


My impression of him is that he is a good open field tackler. He isn't a punishing tackler. He is very good as a gunner. He has very quick instincts, a great change of direction and acceleration. He looked slow to diagnose plays. He took bad angles and you would see him change his angle sometimes 2 or 3 times to compensate. He played a lot of single high safety, but I think his most natural fit is in cover 3.


I view him as a late 2nd or early 3rd type prospect.

Jones is a little bit undersized (5'10) and that could turn some teams off on him. He was also a safety before they switched him to corner. Just wouldn't surprise me at all if teams were looking at him back as a safety. If he's there in the second then it's a no brainer to pick him at 36.

 

 

We can really use a RB at 36. There's got to be a FS prospect to snag at the top of round three.

Surely you're not advocating a non Gurley RB over Byron Jones? Jones won't be there at 36, but as everyone else has said...if he is you do cartwheels to the podium.

Weak class of FS's (has there been a strong one in the past 5 years?), so I'd be looking at CB converts. Eric Rowe is the most obvious but I'm not so sure anymore he makes it to round 3. I was hopeful initially but it may be wishful thinking on my part. How about Ladarius Gunter in round 6? He's got the size but he ran a poor 40 and according to nfldraftscout, he struggles with his back to the ball - sounds like a try at FS is worth it. Nick Marshall is another candidate. Give him the full year to develop and see what we have in 2016. I actually get excited looking at mid to late round DB's. There seems to be a lot of steals later in the draft - other than maybe RB, more than any other position group.

I have yet to see a single draftnik not rave about the guy as a player also. Great tape, great measurables, and good versatility. Between going to a smaller school, being injured much of last year, and switching positions...he just fell through the cracks. It happens sometimes. Once people saw the crazy combine numbers and got a hold of his game tape they saw a great player too.

I've hear plenty of valid criticisms of Jones as a player as well.  Look, I'm not saying he's not a good prospect because I think he is.  But I don't think he's amazing value at the bottom of the 1st.  He may be decent value at our pick in round 2, but that also depends on who else is available.

For instance, a guy like Cam Erving if he drops to 36 would be way more valuable to most teams IMO.  (may not be a fair comparison because I think Ervin goes in the 1st round for sure).

 

I just don't think we will do cartwheels on the way to the podium if Jones is available at 36.  

 

Injury history, and appears to play slower than he actually measured at the combine.

 

It's your classic "freak out because someone ACED the combine" syndrome.  

 

I don't see him that dominant in the videos I've watched.  His measurables don't add up to his game tape, whereas another guy who did great at the combine - Vic Beasley, the tape measures up to his combine performance.

The Byron Jones hype to me is pretty similar to the Stephen hill hype. People thought we should run to the podium (some even thought we should draft him in the first) if this guy with first round measurables but lackluster play was still available in the 2nd
