Matt Jones is actually an excellent comparison athletically.

 

Jones killed the combine, but was a long strider.

 

Same thing with Byron Jones - he ran very well and jumped incredibly high/far, but he's a long strider and doesn't possess elite foot quickness.

 

I'm not saying Jones isn't a great athlete, because he is - but watching his cutups he doesn't really appear to have that much quickness and short area speed....

 

Just like Matt Jones destroyed the combine, but when he actually played for US he looked like he was running knee-high in molasses.

We can really use a RB at 36. There's got to be a FS prospect to snag at the top of round three.

i dont really agree with that in terms of jones. he was fast and looked smooth running. he was raw as a WR, didnt run good routes, he was improving and then the cocaine derailed everything.

He was fast running go routes - but in shorter routes that relied more on quickness - he didn't stand out as anything more than just a guy.

 

I do agree that he failed not because of lack of athleticism (he had plenty of that), but his off-field problems were his downfall.

Yes, I'm actually doing a write-up of the top 10 players at each position and why I have them ranked the way I do.  I started it like 2 weeks ago, but I've been too lazy to finish.  I got over half way through it and then accidently deleted it and had to restart.  I did two last year and felt like it was pretty accurate.  I'll probably post this year's sometime in the next week or so.  I spend time looking at about the top 15 or 20 players at each position every year.  Some players I watch more than others - I'll only watch 2 or 3 games of a player if I think they look terrible, but most players that show anything or are highly regarded I'll look at probably 5 or 6 games  or more and the top players I'll rewatch the games multiple times.

I just realized he's the guy with the world record broad jump. He also led all dbs in most drills, but had a slow 4.6 in the 40 which is somewhat concerning. One question I have is... Just how highly regarded of a prospect was Bryan prior to the combine?


 

I can see him being converted to FS with all this in mind, but there are a couple RBs that would be tough to pass up for him at #36 should they all fall.

I would like to see who it is, cause honestly every single person I follow that has watched him has nothing but rave reviews. I want to see someone's critique's cause I am sure they're out there, just seems few and far between.

From what I've seen of Byron Jones, he doesn't really stand out on tape.  Not really a knock on him, but he just doesn't flash from the games that I've seen.  I think I need to see more, but he looks like an above average player with some unique physical abilities.  He could stand to be a little more aggressive in run support - he has more of a play-it-safe mentality in that regard.  I wouldn't touch him at #36, but I'd consider him at the end of round 2, but more specifically in round 3.  The games that I saw he was really hard to get a good evaluation.

It's often tough to truly evaluate a CB on game tape. Often it's more telling when you don't see them because the ball isn't going their way for good reason.

That makes more sense. I went to a couple sites and all they would list was his broadjump, etc, but no 40-time. ...so I looked up 40 yard dash with his name, and saw a few links in the Google comments saying 4.61... that must have been a different player. For some reason, this was a tough stat to look up. A 4.4 is average for a nfl db, so the 4.6 really had me scratching my head.

I agree. If Gordon or Gurley are there, you have to take them over a guy who nobody had heard of before the combine. You might add Ajayi or Abdullah to that list if you think they are good enough and they won't fall to the third round (they won't)


I think this thread is proving that, despite what people say, the combine does matter. At least to fans and pundits...

That write-up is as overly verbose as it is inconclusive. It's not that it's horrible. Rather, it's as repetitive as it is formulaic. That article is as long as it is not short. It's not great. Rather it's as thesaurus-driven as it is strangely worded at times. It's as prone to juxtaposition comparisons as it is to changing conclusions halfway through. Rather...

 

It's not quite as painful to read as your post (parody detected), but I agree, it does leave you searching for an answer (assuming you said that somewhere in your post). Still, at least there's some attempt at analysis. I haven't found anything else that actually breaks down his play.

There are a few candidates that fit that bill.  Eric Rowe being one of them.

I believe Shaw is another.

 

Prewitt slid because he didn't have a good year. He'll likely be drafted higher than he should because of a lack of FS in this class. Even still, it'll be mid round 2 at best.

 

If a project like Rowe or Shaw doesn't work out the FS draft class is likely to be better next season.

I'd be OK if stud RB and stud FS were the final two pieces of Dave's building.

Assuming all the other pieces he's gathered so far work out as we hope.

 

We have to be patient with FS for now and hope that the combination of guys we have added with the possibility of a mid to late round pick at DB/FS will be enough to get by.

 

Hopefully our pass rush stays near the top of the league... it certainly would help.
