So a tight end converting to 3 tech is supposed to light up career sack totals, especially in the conference that he played in?

Beasley converted from TE to LB to DE and became the all time ACC sack leader in basically 2.5 seasons of play. Doesn't prove or disprove your statement...just pointing it out.

Leo is a position asked to rush the passer…rarely asked to set the edge or get off blocks to pursue the run.

Fowler can rush the passer effectively if given the opportunities that were given to Beasley. No doubt in my mind. Also, who said we just need to draft a LEO (which Fowler can play)? I could see Dave going Fowler at 3 and maybe draft Danielle Hunter or Eli Harold at 36 to play LEO.

Fowler would make for a great 4-3 RDE with most teams, and would probably do ok at OTTO in Jacksonville. Beasley would probably do a comparable job at OTTO and might get overwhelmed in a traditional 4-3 RDE role, but he likely makes the Pro Bowl at LEO.

People are acting like Beasley was a one trick pony.  He was a complete defensive end.  We aren't talking about a 3-4 OLB that exclusively rushed the passer.  He was a defensive end who was an elite pass rusher.  Everything Fowler did, Beasley did at Clemson, albeit less often.  This versatility thing with Fowler is driving me nuts.  He isn't versatile enough to drop into coverage regularly in the NFL and he hasn't done it since he was a freshman and 40 pounds lighter.  He's a buck end who you can move into 3 different positions (probably 2) on the line and rush standing up as a linebacker.  Beasley can certainly do all of that.

 

I would normally give credit where its due, but I honestly see Beasley as better than Fowler in every facet with the caveat of 1 or 2 unknowns.  He is faster, stronger, more agile, and more productive.

I don't want to make excuses for Fowler but he is only 20 yo and is a full 2 years younger than Beasley and his body shows that. He has not gotten to the stage in his life where it will be easier to get bigger and stronger. Fowler does have tree trunks for legs and that is where he gets his explosiveness and power.

 

Cam Robinson was only 18 years old when he abused Fowler.  Just sayin'.

 

Not saying Fowler can't develop physically, I would certainly think he would.  The difference is that Beasley already has an NFL body while Fowler has some work to do.

Michael Sam had 11.5 sacks his senior year and went 7th round and is out of the league in 1 year. Just pointing out sack numbers in college dont matter that much

Beasley didn't play 3 tech or in a very heavily rush orientated conference.  All comparisons are not alike, but I'm just pointing out that there was a reason Watt didn't produce sacks in college.  There was also a reason he went towards the top of the first round of the draft.

As I've been saying, Vic in my book is the more ideal LEO, however, it's tough to say "every facet." I did notice that Fowler had considerably more tackles. I've pointed out that Vic had more TFLs, but Fowler did have considerably more overall tackles for whatever that's worth. Dante had 60 tackles last year

and 90 over the past two
(25 TFLs)
where Beasley had 34 last year
(21.5 TFLs)
and 75 over the past two
(44.5 TFLs)
. You could say that Beasley didn't have to set the edge too often considering 2/3 of his tackles were in the backfield.

I guess.  Most of Fowler's tackles were assisted tackles though.  They were very similar in solo tackles.
