We drafted our LT, QB, and pass rusher as planned.


The core of the team is extremely young and shows promise. Nothing to complain about just sit back and watch them develop.

it wasnt as much as odrick and williams having a similar skillset. williams is still the better pass rusher. it was more about the injuries we have on our line. i guess they feel comfortable with the depth and marks coming back though, which is a great thing.

The youth argument is great for an athletic, high upside, and raw player. Experience is the key ingredient those types need to blossom.

 

Fowler and Williams are both limited athletically (especially Fowler) so the youth argument isn't as strong. Experience will help, and they probably will get stronger sure, but Fowler isn't going to suddenly gain change of direction skills or more explosion. What we've seen is largely what he is going to be. 

 

Eh disagree. He's 20 years old. He's far from the peak of his physical prowess.

It's very obvious to me that Dave had to decide between Fowler and Cooper. I'm sure Dave wanted Cooper, but went with Fowler because of Gus. I think it was the wrong pick. We drafted Bortles last year and proceeded to be decimated at the WR position because of injuries and inexperience. I really believe that this offseason should've been entirely about making sure Bortles was surrounded with talent. Derek Carr was the guy who looked like he should've been the 3rd overall pick last year, and now he has a fantastic new weapon to use. Bortles? Well, let's at least hope injury doesn't mangle our WR corps like it does every other year.

 

Sounds like Dave wanted Fowler based on his interviews.

My larger point is that I think we have a legitimate shot for at least 8 wins.  In my mind, until I see the team on the field, I don't think we beat the Colts.

 

But Fowler should help with that!

I'm totally fine with this draft pick.  They need youth and more production from the Leo position and this guy seems as good a candidate to accomplish that as anyone rated highly in this draft class.  

 

Yes, I was a little more impressed watching Beasley's cut-ups than I was Fowler's -  but by a pretty small margin. 

 

Excited to see what tonight brings for the Jaguars.

Beasley had two problems.   One, he didn't play the run.  At all.   And two, he took plays off.   They played several videos last night to show how he tended to stand around on running plays.  Yes, he rushes the passer really well, but that's not the only thing a front 7 player has to do. 

 

But from everything I hear, Fowler never takes plays off.  

 

Fowler is a 3 down player.   Beasley is a specialty pass rusher.

most of the beasley lovers are actually ok. the worst of them is KY, he is our modern version of alfie. acts like a know it all and gets upset when a professional NFL franchise doesnt pick the player he was clamoring for. 

 

drafting isnt an exact science, the pros get it wrong sometimes, but ill 100% take our teams opinion over KY and some hash tag groupies. 

 

we will get to see who the better player is and as someone else mentioned, the defensive schemes they will both play in might be pretty similar. 

 

bashing fowler and calling him a poor athlete is just ignorant. he didnt light up the sparq charts, but if you watch game tape on fowler, he lived in the backfield. hes a disruptive monster, gus is only going to make this guy better. 

 

i think in a couple years youre going to be looking at our equivalent of suggs.

Not sure if I'm disappointed in the pick, or just not that excited about it.

 

I'm very surprised he would have been graded that high.  Which leads me to believe, perhaps it's simply that none of the guys at the top were rated as high as they usually are in a typical draft.  Certainly he was graded relatively the same (not a significant difference) as anyone left on the board.  I don't think there was much difference between any of the guys in the top 10.  Look at where an injured running back came off the board... 10.

 

No RBs came off in the first round last year at all.  More talent in that draft.

 

Some suggested this wasn't a strong draft at the top.  After last night, I'm thoroughly convinced of that.  I think there will be plenty of "very good" players to come from this draft, but few superstars.

 

The real beauty of this draft, the most impactful additions to our club, are likely to be what magic we can work in the second, third, and fourth rounds.  That's where the heart of this draft seems to be.  There seems to be a lot of good talent left to come off the board tonight, and early Saturday.

 

Pretty much my thoughts.


 

This was a no-brainer pick. Any message board idiot could have made it. That doesn't make it right or wrong, just easy.


 

I had hoped for a trade down since there didn't seem to be much diffference in value among the top 6-10 picks. The speed with which Caldwell made the pick implies that I was wrong and he thought Fowler was way better than the players available later.


 

We'll soon see if that was the case.

Any pick you take in the top 5 that doesn't end up a Pro Bowler is disappointing.  So yes, there are high expectations, as there should be.

One thing to keep in mind, Telvin and Fowler on the same side. That's two speed players with non-stop motors and with violent intentions.
