First I would just say cause college OTs are bad, especially on the right side where most of that happened. Second, Fowler's first step is fine, not great but good enough. It's his agility/bend/CoD that is lacking. 

 

If Fowler had such average ability, I can't imagine why Mike Mayock would be so high on him.  He's very critical, and brutally honest.

Agreed.  I just see him as very agile for his size.  And debut, I like and respect Mayock and Cosell and their opinions a lot.  I stand corrected in that Mayock had Williams as the best player in the draft.  For the Jags, where do you put him?  If we hadn't signed Odrick, I think he would have been the pick.

He would have been worth the pick regardless of Odrick.  What the numbers didn't tell is how he dominated his competition on tape.  Man.  Handled.

 

The pick of Fowler had everything to do with filling need.  And it also tells us the relative grades were fairly equal.  Which, looking from a broader perspective, suggests this draft was weaker than advertised.  The few trades back that sentiment as well, as teams were mostly satisfied to let players go off the board and select from what fell.

 

If it weren't for what is expected to be a strong middle of the draft, this could have gone down as one of the weakest drafts in some time.

I definitely agree that this was a need pick.  I also agree that Williams would have been a great pick, regardless of the numbers at that position.  I do think the Odrick signing did play a small part in not signing Williams.  You may know more on that than I do, though.

This is what I thought. Fowler, LEO - Skuta, OTTO. To me, different body types and skill sets.

Fowler can play either. Skuta is pretty much only a Sam/Otto/Buck etc. Skuta will play Otto dor sure. I was just saying Fowler would probably be a better otto than leo at this point in time.

Everyone gets stonewalled. JJ Watt gets stonewalled.


Beasley and Gregory win matchups against good players. Fowler rarely does. He sets the edge well in the run game sideline to sideline, but once a decent tackle gets into his pads, he's done. The problem is that you rarely win the 1v1 matchups unless you can get the tackles off balance, and Fowler lacks the power to move a tackle in a straight up matchup. Watch La'el Collins and Cam Robinson run him over.


Good player - he just needs the weight room badly. He's young and his body has already improved massively since he walked onto campus, but its something he really needs to continue working on and at a greater pace.

So you're saying he'll have to workout and practice hard to be a good player? Amazing logic. I thought he was going to the Hall of Fame based on his college career.

When you looked at his measurables, it was all there.  Most scouts really liked him.  I won't argue that he was way off, but he has been spot on a lot more than he's missed.  Just my opinion.
