Redskins name change

Quote:I don't think it is the whole world. (yeah, I know it was a typo) Tongue

The FACT that I and millions of others DO NOT consider the name Redskins is anything but honorable is what you are trying to tell me isn't true. I don't care how many "What ifs" you use.

What if that were true? What if you can't believe that? What if maybe you are wrong? What if I don't look at the world through your eyes? What if I am an American Indian? I don't know what else to say about What if, because what ifs are never the end of what ifs. Wink

Do millions of people not consider the name Redskins anything but honorable? Or is it just that they don't care since it doesn't affect them and the name as a football team has been around for so long. You're making the assumption that these people think exactly the way you do, which you have no way of proving.

Well, it isn't like you showed up with excel spread sheets, sanctioned polls, and powerpoint slide shows to prove that the statements you made about the facts you stated were anything but assumptions, either. However you did come with a list of what ifs. :woot:

Most polls tend to conclude that most Native Americans don't care.  Sure, there are some that want it changed.  But honestly it's a spit in the face of the Native Americans to think that changing the name of the Redskins is doing something for their plight.

Why are we caring about a football team mascot when there are far more pressing issues?  The name Redskins doesn't promote hatred towards Native Americans.  It's not the first, nor is it the last barrier for the Native Americans.  Many of them are ignored -- except when it comes to the football team.  Does the D.C. council care that Native Americans on reservations have among the highest suicide rates?  No.  All they care about is the name of the Redskins is Offensive!  I'm sure they'll quit committing suicide if we change the name of a football team.  I'm sure it'll solve their teen pregnancy issue.

Actually, I think the only thing it will do is make them more invisible than they already are.  Nobody talks about the real issues that Native Americans face.  You don't see advocacy groups trying to improve the lives of Native Americans.  Just ones to make sure they aren't offended.  Because that's obviously their biggest problem today.  Being offended.  Not that their poverty rate is far higher than the national average.  Nope.  That's small potatoes.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

Pretty sure I posted what was in my heart.

What if I hate playing what if with you because I respect you way too much to play what if with you? Would that be okay? What if I concede because more damage comes from what if than I would wish to wager? Sad

You and mommy have a lot of brothers.  All my uncles are nice to me, but they always come over while you're at work.  They like to joke with mommy because I always hear them giggling, and stuff, in the other room.

She doesn't giggle with me, she always has a headache.

I don't think any subjugated people would consider nicknames given to them by the culture that robed, pillaged, raped, and basically marginalized them on their own land, as signs of respect.

They have 500 years of understanding that the western culture has absolutely no respect for them. I can understand why they don't like the cutesie little nickname given to them by their conquerors plastered all over the media.

It's kind of the same reason a person wouldn't want to continue to be called by a nickname a bully gave them in grade school. People can say later on that they don't mean it the same way as the bully did, but that would matter little from their perspective. It still wouldn't be appreciated.

You know some 500 year old Indians?

Do you go around apologizing to minorities for what your ancestors did? Try moving forward a few decades, and just for a moment consider not all people are like you.

So a Native American can't understand history or it's impact on their people and culture?

Native American's to this day are still being subjugated on reservations with the western culture still imposing it's will upon them. You are showing the kind of ignorance that is motivating them to do things like this. They want to be treated as human beings with their own culture, not like some sort of mythical beast or action figure.

Native Americans have written and spoken out on many occasions about how they despise their place in our western culture. They don't care about the view of them as "noble savages" who need the indoctrination of the white man's culture in order to save them from themselves. We still to this day send their kids to boarding schools designed to strip them of their culture in order to integrate them into the white man's ways.

You probably should educate yourself in the reality of what these peoples lives are like and understand that a different culture, for very legitimate reasons, can have a completely different perspective of the world and their place in it..

Any person of color will tell you that nothing about the name redskins is honorable. How would people feel if the name was changed to Washington Rednecks? That can't be offensive right?

Doing absolutely nothing and ignoring the concerns of another group is worst.

And yet through all that, the name Redskins is worthy of such a battle? Tell me what you are doing to make a difference in their plight.

I don't care how you view the name Redskins, it doesn't change the way I do. Is it really that hard for you to comprehend?
