I think we should draft another pass rusher next year
|
Quote:That is what I was thinking. I don't think he has shown that he can be a dominant player. He does get doubled a lot but I'm still waiting to see him take over a game per se. I'm an Ole Miss alum and the guy that really catches my eye is Haynes. Freshman all SEC at DE with 7.5 sacks in limited action. If he can put on 30 lbs over the next 2 years and keep his athleticism he would make a great Leo. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

Quote:First off, this isn't a knee jerk to the ACL injury, it's something that's been in my mind since we took Fowler. In terms of the context of this draft, Fowler was definitely the #1 defensive player. He can do everything you want from an edge rusher and plus plays with a high motor and passion, and can definitely be a key piece on a championship team. THAT SAID, I don't think he will ever be that truly dominant pass rusher that's a mismatch nightmare and can just beat guys with sheer speed or power. He doesn't project those measurables, and it doesn't show up on tape. I think ideally Fowler is a high end, complimentary piece of all complimentary pieces on an elite defense, sort of like a rich man's Ahmad Brooks. Ideally he will be the guy who you can just put all over the field and have him reek havok, while a more natural pass rusher is at LEO. I think that's who he is and I'm pretty sure eventually Gus/Dave will realize that. He can hold down the LEO position, but I think if a better, more pure pass rushing option presents itself next year we should take it. If we're picking high enough to get Bosa next year then we probably have a lot bigger problems than LEO, but, if he's there somehow when we pick and we're around 8-10 we should take him.I don't necessarily find your advocacy reactionary. There was I thought a compelling argument to double up on pass rushers this year. Considering Fowler is coming off an ACL, Clemons will be 34 next year, and Branch will likely be a free agent (barring a career explosion from him this year), there is a strong case to be made for another pass rusher somewhere in the next draft. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
Quote:I don't necessarily find your advocacy reactionary. its all going to come down to value, where we are picking, and of course if someone slips down. if we are picking say 12th, no high level LB or FS is worth there or is already gone, and we are staring at a high level pass rusher, i have no problem adding him to the mix.

next year's draft is very bad in terms of edge rushers though. There are very few of them and none are first round worthy, maybe not even second round.

Quote:next year's draft is very bad in terms of edge rushers though. There are very few of them and none are first round worthy, maybe not even second round. Agreed. Caldwell hit on that as well when explaining the thought process in selecting Fowler. Something along the lines of "We're halfway thru watching next years crop of pass rushers and only one has received a passing grade so far".

If you're talking about tweeners, then yeah bosa and oakman aren't tweeners, but they both can and will play a pass rushing role as an end.

No, they could not play the LEO end for us, especially Oakman. You question my football knowledge, but if you knew anything about this defense, you'd know that those two are not a fit at LEO at all. They'd be the 5T/Big end in our system with the ability to be moved inside on certain downs, like Odrick. Bose is 6'5'' 284lbs and maybe while he's fast for that size, he's no where near fast enough to play LEO. Oakman is even bigger and slower. They're power ends and use power to rush the passer, they're not LEO fits which is all about beating the man with speed primarily. Maybe you could slim Bosa down but then you're talking about a projection, and he might become a liability against the run, you'd never know. He's a more natural fit at 5T as he is now.
And if you really think Oakman is a first round talent just because he is big then lol. He sucks and only beas people because of his size advantage which won't work in the NFL, and honestly I think he's just too big. "A man with no sauce is lost.

I would love to get Scooby Wright. Last year he had 29 TFL and 14 sacks and is 6'3" 245. He would be perfect for the OTTO position. Imagine a fully healthy Fowler rushing the QB with Wright right behind him.

The coaching staff would either have to get creative to put both guys on the field in our current base defensive scheme or take an approach similar to the Texans. When(if) clowney is healthy, they're still going to have him an JJ on the field at the same time. Outside of that, I never said that either guy was made for our LEO role. I said they were edge rushers. Teams will take both of those guys in the first round, for sure, to play end in a 4-3

There's a very good argument for drafting a pass rusher every year.
