What happens if a team goes for a PAT, has it blocked, gains control of the ball and runs it into the end zone?  1 point or 2 points?  I would think 2, because it's a live ball now and if one team can recover the ball and run it for 2, why can't either team do that?

What happens if a team goes for a PAT, has it blocked, gains control of the ball and runs it into the end zone? 1 point or 2 points? I would think 2, because it's a live ball now and if one team can recover the ball and run it for 2, why can't either team do that?

I believe the only caveat is that the ball must stay behind the line of scrimmage in this scenario.

I don't understand the risk of injury thing. The risk of injury is on any play whether it be an extra point, or 3rd and 7 from the plus 43. It's football. To cite something like that is simply an excuse as to why some would like to abolish, or change what a current rule is.

Except they changed the kickoff for that reason, as you even you noted. And they managed to make it a bit more worthless in the process.

I don't like it. I don't understand this need for a huge excitement factor on every single play in a football game.

I can envision scenarios where a team will take the lead by 1 with seconds left in the game, and instead of kicking an extra point or even going for two, they take a knee to avoid the risk of a -2 point turnover.

Good point.  And defensive strategies could become much more aggressive on PAT attempts, since a blocked kick gives the D a pretty good chance to score.  That would be a 3-point swing, essentially equal to a FG.

I think that it's going to be like Pop Warner football; you line up on the 15, you're kicking. You line up on the two, you're going for it. No trickery allowed.

Extra point plays currently do not affect the game clock for time remaining. The only thing that runs during that time wise is the play clock and obviously time itself.

My point is that teams with a one point lead with little time remaining and an extra point to attempt are now at risk of surrendering two points and the lead. They will be risk averse and not attempt the extra point at all, downing the ball almost like a victory formation at the end of a half or game to keep from turning it over or getting it blocked and returned.

Why not just run a two-point conversion? I don't see the risk. No more so than taking a knee and then kicking off.

Oh I know why they changed it, and it has definitely affected the overall number of returns. The kickoff is a play where the threat of injury would be higher based on the speed that can be generated by the coverage team and the returner. It's an all out sprint. I still say that there's a risk of injury on every play, if the powers that be think a certain aspect is more at risk, just take it out of the game. Don't dumb it down so much that it becomes a boring part of the game. That is what I like about the PAT, it should make things a little more interesting. It definitely won't make it less interesting as kickoffs have become with so many touchbacks and less returns.
