I have been pounding the table for Yeldon for awhile. I think his skill set was so underrated and I think he ends up being a much better pro than he was a college running back. He will surprise a lot of people.

Yeldon could truly make Robinson a more effective weapon. Robinson is never going to punish any defenses.

I think things need to be put into proper perspective for Robinson.


He was utilized more last year than he was in his rookie season, so the stats SHOULD have shown significant improvement based on the sheer volume of touches he had last year.


He did improve in fumbles and touchdowns. He went from 3 fumbles his rookie year (2 lost) to 2 fumbles last year (2 lost). His 4 touchdowns last year were a marked improvement over zero as a rookie.


Still, he had a strong 3 game stretch in the middle of the season, and still didn't secure the starting job.


Like I said, he improved. I wouldn't consider it a dramatic improvement, but he did improve over his rookie season. Still, I don't see him being anything more than a guy in the rotation. Yeldon has the potential to be your every down back. Nobody is going to say that about Robinson. That doesn't diminish what he does bring to the table. It's just a realistic view that he's never going to be a feature back, IMO.


If you look at his stats prior to and then following the back to back 100 yard games, it shows the complete lack of consistency last season. Prior to his foot injury, he was already seeing his production trailing off after a strong mid-season.


When we start calling his improvement remarkable, we're falling into the trap some here like to throw out there that we're fine with mediocrity. What we saw from Robinson was nice improvement over his rookie year. For it to be remarkable, IMO, he would have had to show more consistency and more production overall. Had he done so, there may not have been a need for the team to draft another RB as high as they did. Clearly the front office wasn't overwhelmed by his performance considering the efforts they made to address RB in free agency, and then again in the draft. Just my opinion, but it seems the front office agrees.

Considering Tim is okay with coach, this is consistent with his viewpoint. The 5th round QB 'has to show more consistency and overall production overall' in his second year as RB behind an adequate line for remarkability. This makes football sense.

Gabbert is franchise via top 10

By the way, I also never consider ARob starter material and I'm glad the team has made efforts to upgrade the position. It should hopefully result in an improvement in the ground game. Pay heed to language, avoid superlatives. I get dissapointed with long biased unintellible posts from credible fans.

If a player shows enough spark in PreSeason he can play himself into a starting role as we watched with WR Allen Hurns last year but the debate I would ask is would Hurns had a chance to shine had it not been due to the injuries at WR.  I think he sparked so much he wouldve but I do think it wouldve taken a bit longer for us to realize how special he is at that position. 

They wouldnt have drafted a RB that high in the 2nd round if they felt very confident in D-Rob at HB, nor would they have paid to bring in Toby last year in FA and hyped him up if they felt so confident in D-Rob. 

Shoelace did show that he is worthy of a spot on the team if nothing else as depth but unless Yeldon gets injured or looks really bad in preseason I dont see how he isnt the starter in week 1.

Only place I saw where the guy was "hyped up" was in fantasy circles. I liked the signing but I also didn't think he would be the savior at that position either.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.  To call him hyped up is a reach.  Most were skeptical that he would make the transition from backup to feature back.  I think the majority expected him to be a pounding workhorse.  That may still be the case.  We'll see soon enough.  The guy played a good portion of last season injured.  Later in the year when he was getting back to healthy, he showed signs that he could be a significant contributor.  Still, like Robinson, I think he's destined to fewer touches if Yeldon remains healthy.

I think most were excited and subsequently let down by what Gerhart brought to the team.  I think he will be our 3rd down back for blocking and screens.  I predict Robinson and Yeldon will share first, second down carries.

I think the Principal RB is going to be more about the situation/scenario that the team is facing. Think about how Fisher used the Chris Johnson / LenDale White combination against us back in those days. He ran Johnson first / early (speed) and then went to White late (power). If the game goes according to plan, and no battle ever does but whatever, then you start out with speed and make them chase you down, then you hit them with power to blow through their arm tackles.

 

This team has a really intriguing mix of talent at the RB position right now, but it remains to be seen how effective they are going to be in utilizing it.

I agree on Yeldon. I don't think you can pigeon-hole the other two. I think they go with the more productive (that game)then work in the third person.
