That's what I thought going into this offseason. House is definitely overpaid but we need him for depth as the worst case. Needing 3 CB starters is a must in this NFL. It is weird to me that Colvin is forced inside when he can play outside too. House can only play outside in this scheme and is being paid an outrageous sum to be the 3rd best we have.

Seems to me that if u have 3 guys who are comfortable playing outside, and one of those three has great comfort and success inside, that u would play the guy who is better suited to play nickle at nickle. Even if he is your best corner, if it would round the defense off better as a whole. I mean why play House or McCrae, Gratz or Harris at the nickle if Colvin plays it better than all of them?

Even if he is your best corner, if it would round the defense off better as a whole. I mean why play House or McCrae, Gratz or Harris at the nickle if Colvin plays it better than all of them?

Yeah, but if a guy is much better on the outside than he is on the inside you are better off keeping him on the outside rather than creating a liability on the inside. There are different levels of being worse off. It's best to move people in order to absorb a small drop in play vs keeping them locked into a position creating a much larger drop at another spot.

 

Also the slot position is no longer considered a secondary receiver. There are teams now whose biggest threat is in the slot. I think people have an antiquated idea of how teams beat you in the passing game.

Colvin is no Boselli. I like Colvin, but let's not create some mythical disparity between Colvin and the rest of the CBs.

 

It's not about getting a single position better, it's about getting the group a a whole better.

 

If moving Boselli to C allows you to make your line as a whole better, then a coach would derelict of his duties not to make that switch in a heartbeat.

Colvin played nearly 80% of the defensive snaps in one of his games last season.  In the same way the RB is being devalued in certain systems, the Nickel is gaining importance in certain defenses.  Teams that run defenses that are as "secondary-centric" as the Carroll/Bradley model play quite a bit more nickel and dime.  The nickel DB gaining value is a current NFL trend IMO.  

 

While I'd have zero issue with Colvin being evaluated as the best option at one of the outside spots, I do understand where Bradley was coming from when he talked about Colvin's spatial awareness and ability to naturally react on the inside.  There are conceivably times when your third best corner isn't the best option at nickel.
