Colvin played nearly 80% of the defensive snaps in one of his games last season.  In the same way the RB is being devalued in certain systems, the Nickel is gaining importance in certain defenses.  Teams that run defenses that are as "secondary-centric" as the Carroll/Bradley model play quite a bit more nickel and dime.  The nickel DB gaining value is a current NFL trend IMO.  

 

While I'd have zero issue with Colvin being evaluated as the best option at one of the outside spots, I do understand where Bradley was coming from when he talked about Colvin's spatial awareness and ability to naturally react on the inside.  There are conceivably times when your third best corner isn't the best option at nickel. 

 

Simple question:

 

Who gets drafted higher and are the best players at the position - nickels or corners?

 

Colvin is much more than a nickel.

 

He's our best corner.

 

Nickels have a specialty.  You can find them.  Stud corners are much harder to find.

 

We're not going to squander our best corner by holding him back at nickel full time.

I get your point, but we obviously just disagree on the importance of the nickel back.  He wasn't "squandered" last year at nickel. He made an impact from the position. 

 

Your opinion that he's "our best corner" may turn out to be true, and of course he should play outside if that's the case.  I've stated that repeatedly.

- sometimes your third best corner isn't your best option at nickel

- the nickel-back position isn't some far-flung step child of the secondary when he's on the field for 70% of the defensive snaps and facing the opponents best receiver several times during the game

 

I just hope someone like a J. Harris, or T. Campbell turn out to be a viable option at nickel and make this debate moot. 

 

In the meantime - I like the idea of moving Colvin inside at times until a solid option emerges as a full-time nickel.

Maybe, maybe not, but gratz has been getting high praise from the coaching staff.


My ideal corners would be colvin and mcray on the outside with gratz playing nickel. Or swap colvin with gratz depending on how they want to use them.

You are correct.  Regardless - the fact that they were able to get him that late weakens the "you don't put a highly drafted CB at nickel" argument.

My stance is still rather "open" on the matter actually.  I think camp and preseason film review will make these decisions apparent for the coaches -- and we really don't know right now how it will pan out. 

 

I'm simply "open" to the concept of moving Colvin inside on a percentage of snaps.  If he turns out to be hands-down the best corner on the team - then that move would be highly questionable - but that isn't a foregone conclusion for me just yet.  Very possible - but as of now, unproven.

Free agent WR James Jones mentioned the Chiefs, Giants, Jaguars, and Seahawks as teams that "fit me."


The Chiefs, Giants, and Seahawks had already been linked to Jones. The Jags would be an interesting fit, as they've seemingly been interested in adding a veteran receiver all offseason, first targeting Randall Cobb before making a run at Greg Jennings. Jones played for new Jaguars OC Greg Olson last year.

I think the two best things that can happen for this team is for Joeckel and Bortles to make strides this year.  If they both play at a very high level, this team has a chance.  My two cents, those are the most important positions for improvement right now, by a long shot.
