The great big Blackmon thread (merged)

Good luck with that.

Also, the Jags (as I understand it) can't cut Blackmon until he's removed from the suspended list. That will probably never happen at this point.

Jags GM doubts Justin Blackmon plays again

Justin Blackmon | JAC

(August 4, 2015 12:39 PM EDT)

Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell said he doubts suspended WR Justin Blackmon ever plays NFL football again.

"Realistically, when you're away from the game for two-and-a-half years, what you were once is not what you will probably be -- your skills do erode, especially when you're not in shape and not in top football shape," Caldwell said, adding that getting back into the league doesn't appear to be a priority for Blackmon. The Times-Union reports the only reason the Jags haven't cut Blackmon is because they're trying to recoup several million of the $7.11 million signing bonus he received as the No. 5 overall pick in 2012.

This information confirms my opinion that in many ways,  Justin Blackmon is the Charles Rogers of the current decade.

The only positive from a Jaguars standpoint is the organization in essence moved on from Blackmon in the 2014 season, with Allen Robinson especially looking like he's on a path to being a long time NFL winning caliber WR.

Quote:So dumb question but how do the Jags get some of that money back?

Only way is to take it to court but usually hard to get spent money back ie Rickie Williams. I doubt Jags will ever take him off team for the reason stated...if he possibly returns(unlikely) he works through contract. They could release him just like they just did with Ace with no penalty but there is no penalty to keep him on the roster. If they released him he could(unlikely) straighten out and sign with another team then after NFL suspension play again. Keeping him on roster assures Jags the only team he can play for next is Jaguars.

You can cut a suspended player. You just lose the rights to him after the suspension and any claim on getting back any of the signing bonus because officially you cut him.

Quote:Curious as to how you ranked the bottom six. I've seen Damian Copeland's name mentioned as a lot higher than the second-worst receiver on the team around here, and Greg Jenkins has been a Jaguar for, what, five days?

I have the bottom six ranked as follows...

<p style="margin-left:40px;">

<p style="margin-left:40px;">8. Tony Washington

<p style="margin-left:40px;">9. Arrelious Benn

<p style="margin-left:40px;">10. Greg Jenkins

<p style="margin-left:40px;">11. Bryan Walters

<p style="margin-left:40px;">12. Damian Copeland

<p style="margin-left:40px;">13. Kasey Closs

<p style="margin-left:40px;">

8. Tony Washington has been, from what I can tell, the most impressive player among these final six this offseason as I keep noticing his name. He was recently predicted to make the roster as the 6th WR in an article, and since that article I keep seeing his name.

9. Benn is probably the most recognizable name on the board, and Oesher recently mentioned him as having a decent shot at being the Jaguars 5th WR in large part due to his potential to earn a return specialist role.

10. Jenkins has experience is Olson's scheme which I feel gives him a distinct edge on claiming a role.

11. Walters maybe should be higher as he's actually done some things in games for the Seahawks and as was picked up fairly early as a free agent. It wouldn't shock me if he ends up beating out the rest. Maybe move him up, but definitely no lower.

12. Copeland has been around Jaguars camp, and I believe on their PS, for a couple years now, but he has no real game experience to speak of. His claim to fame so far is merely that he's been learning under the Jaguars esteemed WR coach.

13. Closs is listed as a WR/PR and was given the #3 as a jersey number. I take it this is because he's primarily a PR and not really in the WR mix wherein he'd have to be lights on on punt returns to have any kind of shot.

I dunno.... why even bother. I mean.. I get it, it's a lot of money. And he really didn't play enough for us.

But that was the risk of signing a guy with questions.

I don't agree with teams getting money back.

Don't sign the guy. Don't give a big contract.

That is part of the negotiations.

Given the fact that guaranteed $$ and signing bonuses are the most important factor with players, you're essentially saying don't sign draft picks or free agents because, without the guaranteed $$ or signing bonus, the player won't sign.

I say hold Blackmon until he retires or is no longer elligable.

Might not be too long,  if he gets a few more pops he could be looking at a lifetime suspension.

I'm not saying don't do it ever.

I'm saying be careful who you draft and sign.

Because that is the risk you take.

Can't get all choir boys. But every GM hits a Blackmon or Jamarcus Russel in some draft or D.Flo or Porter FA period.

It's the risk of the biz.

If you give someone 'guaranteed' money, then it is contractually binding to give it up, regardless of what they do (or don't do)

Now if you write the contract in such a way to protect the money, that is different.

Maybe they did write JB's that way, I don't know.

But if not... take your losses/lumps and move on.
