Why TJ Yeldon is Undervalued

#21

Fumbles are bad yes.... But if he makes up for them with TDs and plenty of yards Im fine. I hope he works out for us.

I agree about the one..... and.....?

Superlatives are a must, Senor. You didn't know? Things have to be embellished, have to be sensationalized...

By the way, cheers for liking my takes.

Quote:I dunno.

I know coaches don't necessarily clamor for RBs with fumbleitis.  But I think it is a cost-benefit analysis.

Consider Hall of Fame RB Tony Dorsett, who played most of his career under Hall of Fame head coach Tom Landry.

He had three (3) seasons of double digit fumbles-1978, 1981, and 1984.

He had two other seasons of eight (8) or more fumbles.

He never had more than 374 touches (rushes and receptions) in a year.

I think if you are an otherwise great RB, coaches will live with some fumbles (albeit through clenched teeth, I'm sure).

The trick for Yeldon is to keep fumbling to a minimum and otherwise prove he is a great RB.

Sure it's about cost and benefit. If he's Adrian Peterson or Tony Dorsett and one of the great talents of his time then he'll be able to endure some fumbles, but from what I understand of Yeldon he's a bigger back that has good moves but doesn't have finishing speed. So while a lot of 7-10 yard runs will please the coaches, a lot of fumbles leading to points for the other team would likely outweigh that.

Yes, I thought it would go without saying, but Dorsett was an overpowering talent at RB and hall of fame player. If Yeldon gets to a point that he's worthy of carrying Dorsett's jock strap we'll be fortunate. Likewise Peterson has been the RB standard bearer since he entered the league. If Yeldon suddenly turns into Fred Taylor then 5 or 6 fumbles a season will be something we'll live with, but I don't think he's that good, so he's going to need to hold on to the ball.

Where do you guys get,he fumbles a lot from 3 fumbles in a year out of how many games.explain how that is a lot of fumbling,as if he fumbles every game more than once. Some fans are blowing the fumbling thing way out of porportion. I doubt fumbling will be an issue.

He doesn't fumble a lot which is stunning to me. Go back and watch him at Bama. Pay close attention to how often he carries the ball away from his body while in traffic. How more defenders didn't knock the ball loose I'll never know.

Most of the analysts I read say he isn't a good blocker at all. But still others say he is excellent. Which is it? I would think that would be obvious on tape.

I definitely think Yeldon in the 2nd this year is the biggest question mark pick Dave has made. No one knows how it will play out

He passed up a lot of talent to take Yeldon, hopefully he made the right choice

Quote:Hi fellow Jaguars fans, I wrote a piece on why I think our rookie TJ Yeldon is undervalued and should prove to be a breakout player this season. Please take a look and would love your feedback.

My honest feedback.

It's a nice "fluff piece" for the dead zone.  If it's geared more towards fantasy football players, then it's a very good write up.  If it's supposed to be "news", then it's kind of poor.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a good piece, but it's mostly opinion rather than fact.  As an example you wrote.

Quote:

As the clear starter out of the backfield, Yeldon is projected to shoulder at least 55–65% of the workload this year, translating to 200–230 carries on the season.

That has not yet been determined.  Is it likely?  Yes, but it's not "clear" at this point.

You also point out the three rookie receivers from last year, but remember, there was Cecil Shorts involved in the offense.  There is also another dynamic added to the offense, that being the addition of a certain TE that isn't mentioned in your article.

With most players, past performance in college does not necessarily translate to performance in the NFL.

Again, don't get me wrong, I like your write up for the most part.  I'm giving you my honest critique.  My advice to you is to keep writing.

He is currently the third most searched NFL player in Rotoworld, he is ranked as the 2nd best rookie by Sports Illustrated despite him not even playing against the Steelers in the Preseason home opener being injured.

-----------------

Scouts wanted Dallas to draft him as a steady power runningback like Marshall Lynch

"I thought he was a hell of a runner, especially on the perimeter," another scout said. "On screens he's got great stop and start. He'll overmatch some DBs with his strength." Yeldon had 576 carries for 3,322 yards (5.8 average) and 37 scores with 46 receptions at Alabama. Of course, he was platooned, which concerns one scout: "He was not their best back (in 2014). Derrick Henry, the sophomore, was. He's not as good as Lacy, but he's better than (Mark) Ingram. Yeldon is really strong and has excellent balance, and he has really good hands. But they always catch him

----------------

ESPN says he wasnt even the best running back on his team in college, and fumbles way too much.  They wonder how any RB can be successful behind the Jaguars poor offensive line.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/2976516/tj-yeldon

------------------

Rotoworld says

The Jaguars are going to divide carries among the backs," DiRocco said, "and slowly increase Yeldon's workload throughout the season." Yeldon missed the Jaguars' opening preseason game with a sprained finger, and DiRocco said Toby Gerhart and Denard Robinson have seen more first-team reps than Yeldon early in training camp. The injury is not considered serious, however, and all reports out of camp have been glowing for the rookie back. Yeldon should establish himself as the lead back sooner rather than later

------------------------------------------------

Fantasy Football has Yeldon as number 11 to draft due to the obivious role he'll have on the Jaguars with 12 group personnel and Greg Olson's commitment to run the ball this year.

My biggest question will we see him play this week?

I'm pretty sure he'll play this week. That's what I've heard at least.

Sweet, I mean if his finger is still bothering him I would rather he sit out otherwise it would be nice to see what the 2nd round pick can do.

I do not know if he is truly underrated as the OP says

http://espn.go.com/blog/jacksonville-jag...all-player

ESPN states:

He is the Jaguars' highest-ranked fantasy player, which is a bit of a surprise considering he hasn't even played in a preseason game yet.

in regards to fantasy football.

http://espn.go.com/blog/jacksonville-jag...k-rotation

An article from ESPN about Bernard Peirce fighting for the starting RB role in Jacksonville.

Do you think the RB role is the closest competition in preseason among all of the roles, if not which one is closer?
