My son lost 3 pounds between 6-month visits, and I had to foot the whole bill of a "wellness" visit to follow up.  My very good California-based insurance company did not pay.

 

And since this morphed into a healthcare thread, I am always surprised when the conservatives defend the American system.  Nothing ticks off my conservative relatives more than the feeling they're not getting what they paid for.  Twice as expensive as the nearest competitor gives us a life expectancy on a par with Costa Rica and behind Slovenia.

Wow, a follow up for a visit related to a failure to thrive is not a wellness visit or preventative service, it's an acute visit. Sounds like your insurance company is playing games or your physician did some unusual coding of the visit. Do you have a deductible-based plan?

Yeah, I think people forget how out of control Healthcare was in the USA prior to the ACA.  Are there still issues?  Absolutely, but at least the ACA stopped the bleeding.

 

Remember when you could have your healthcare dropped or never instated because of pre-existing conditions?  I do

 

Remember when COBRA cost 600 bucks a month if you got laid off?  I do

 

Remember when poor people couldn't afford healthcare so they went without?  I do

 

There are still issue with the ACA, but it's start...

Yea cobra sucked except now regular premium are pretty close to 600 bucks a month, there is literally nothing successful about the ACA it went from bad to worse.

Uh, yeah, I guess you are technically correct about the poor. I guess you don't think they should get subsidized? So I'll rephrase it, poor people now have access through the aca to healthcare. Prior to that aca, the were out of luck.


The second point you made isn't my experience... but I guess some are paying 600 a month? I'm pretty sure that someone that got fired or is low income isn't paying that much...


I think the real question to consider is whether or not you think healthcare benefits the society and therefore should be something all citizens have access to.

Hey, you guys can go on and on about the ACA - feel free. Like it'll be solved here, or that anyone will be convinced.

 

But that's a cheap shot against the USPS. It's apples and oranges when comparing it to FedEx or UPS. I still think it's a modern miracle that for $0.50 I can drop an eight page letter in a mailbox in Jacksonville and three days later it appears in someone's mailbox in Billings, Montana. Amazing.

Every time I order something or ship something it is hands down cheaper and faster to use USPS. Even when I shipped a package to Germany. Cheaper by almost 1/3rd

It would be more expensive. That's the point of business as you guys like to remind us. To make more and more money. You do that by raising prices (hospitals/doctors) in a colluded way or by swallowing competition to create a monopoly because that's what unregulated markets do or by denying services (insurance carriers) because that's what they have been doing for decades.

You do realize that competition creates price controls, no? Artificial parameters to any market distort the natural control mechanisms and the cost in health care because of government intervention are astounding.

My mom sends baby clothes to my son like once a month. Basically any time she finds something she thinks it's cute, it's shipped via usps... it gets here in 3 or 4 days.


Whenever I order anything via ground delivery with FedEx, it takes at least a week... that's been my experience... but it's anecdotal, so take it as you wish...

You do realize that the regulation free, free market trends towards monopolies and collusion, no? That means little to no competition. Hence why I mentioned those two things. You can't have zero regulation.

It's supposedly "cheaper" to use the USPS because you are looking at shipping rates being charged to you at the counter.  How long has it been since the USPS did not operate "in the red"?  The rest of the cost gets passed on to EVERYBODY because the government pays for the rest of the cost of shipping your package/letter.
