Signs of Progression from Bortles

#1

Lets chuck the math out of the equation and look at the eye test.  I saw a QB who looked comfortable in the pocket and kept his eyes downfield. His wobbly duck seems to be gone replaced with a tight spiral. I saw confidence.  There were 2 plays that really stood out.

Play 1:  Mid to late 1st quarter.  I believe it was the Joke Jokel whiffed on James Harrison.  Borltes saw the rush, stepped into the pocket and made an attack throw for the TD.  He did overthrow the ball but it shows he made the right decision.

Play 2: I believe this was in the early second quarter (few beers)  Bortles throws a deep accurate ball right on the money to Clay Harbor on a deep crossing route.  If Harbor catches it he was going to score.  Butterfingers ruined the play.

That is the good news, he does look better. First pre-season game, I am not going too get to excited yet. Still, he didn't suck Friday. And overall he had good protection, let's hope that carries on through the season. Lot's left to see,  he looked good last pre-season too.

He's stepping up in the pocket, and he looked a lot more poised out there.

Let's face facts, he's a gonna be a star in this league

He also played against the twos last preseason. The fact he looks better this year going against the ones, compared to last year and twos is probably the best news us jags fans have hadinalong time

The crossing pass to Harbor was a beautiful throw with touch. Too bad the catch was not made.

This.  He looked pretty good against the Steelers #1 D.  The Steelers aren't as dominating as they were a few years ago but they're still pretty good and will be right there to win the AFC North.

Dude, I just watched that play.

First off the pass protection was good. Luke actually did well one on one with the DE, looks like bb5 went through his progressions, and then the throw was a thing of beauty!

It was a perfect pass.  Hopefully Harbor leaves that mistake right here in preseason.  We should pretty much never see that ever again.  That HAS to be caught.

I was very impressed by the accuracy through improved mechanics BB5 displayed last Friday.  Also, he was controlling the defense with pump fakes, bootlegs, delay runs, and looking off defenders.  Very progressive from last year's form IMO.  Will it carry over to the regular season?

I was very impressed, however Pitts defense is pretty bad and the Jags WR had plenty of space.

Stepping up in the pocket vs. taking off to pick up a few yards stands out.

Pittsburgh on the other hand better pray Roethlisberger stays healthy. Jones looks pretty bad.

If you scroll down below the Chip Kelly story, there is a nice piece about Blake Bortles.

Davon House's comments are particularly interesting to me.

James Harrison of the Steelers was upset after the game that the Jags 1st offense was able to move the ball against them

He looked way better than last year.  The O-line being better too is going to help a ton.

I liked Bortles comments. He's got the perfect attitude for a top tier QB, and the work ethic and talent to take him there. If he progresses as he should, it will be fun to watch, people are definitely sleeping on him but there's a few out there who see it. I think it was Jaws who even had him ranked higher than Teddy this year. It's gotta be hard for someone to not like him, he handles the media very well.

I think the work is paying off. The two TD throws he made during the scrimmage, they're similar types. Perfectly thrown over the shoulder where only the receiver can catch it or drop it. Arob and Julius both made the play in those instances

If the OL gives him time, and the running game gives him balance, and the receivers can stay healthy, I think we can have the best QB play we've seen here in a long time.
