This is a hard one. Scobee is proven, but old. Myers is young, and has been booting the ball from downtown.


I wouldn't care tbh. I'll still never forgive scobee for missing the 60 yarder game winner against Pittsburgh.

 

For me, I've always called Scobee "money" when it comes to kicking field goals.

Didn't Coughlin hold gong show tryouts basically every Tuesday of that year? Cunningham was only around for a week, not even long enough to be terrible lol.

 

In fairness, Danny Boyd hit all five of his field goal attempts while with the team. That said, I clearly remember the team going for it on fourth down at least once just to keep him off the field, and he never attempted a kick longer than 39 yards lol

Exactly. Kickers of their caliber are a dime a dozen, but Kicker's like Scobee and Myers certainly are not. That's like saying WRs are a dime a dozen. Sure WRs like Benn are a dime a dozen, but WRs like Jordy Nelson are not.

You have to put it in perspective too.  IIRC Mike Hollis aced the field goals, but didn't really have the leg strength for kickoffs.  I seem to remember at one point having a "kickoff specialist" on the team.  I could be wrong about that.

Hollis was terrible on field goals in 2001, though. That and his rocky relationship with Coughlin paved the way for his departure, and I seem to recall hearing on sports talk radio back then that he was almost cut a couple of times during the season.

 

The Jaguars did start carrying a kickoff specialist in...1999? First it was Steve Lindsey, who doubled as a punter for a few games when Bryan Barker was hurt, then Jim Tarle (who was awful), then Jaret Holmes, who infamously took the last PAT of the 2001 season as Coughlin's way of telling Hollis what he could go do to himself.

You're right about that. This is why Scobee has been such a breath of fresh air. Hollis had an exceptionally weak leg but was accurate as heck. I think the Bills right now are undergoing a similar problem with having an accurate but weak-legged FG kicker and along with an erratic but strong-legged kickoff specialist.

Scobee is just solid. Unless he was having a poor preseason I don't see him getting released. It would suck if Myers missed a field goal to win a game that Scobee makes 99% of the time. Sure Myers might make a 62 yarder but you can't just go by that.

Which only serves to make the whole "cut Scobee because youth" argument that much more ridiculous.
