Could Webster get cut? 

 

Yes.  

 

Larry Webster looked promising last summer as a rookie.

 

He wasn't used on Defense in the regular season but based on all reports was progressing to the point that he would be in the rotation this year.    Webster added 20 pounds on his previously lean frame.   I'm not sure if Webster has been adversely affected by the extra weight.  

 

Webster actually played somewhat better against the Jags backups than he played against the Jets and Redskins backups.  

 

But the bottom line is right now,   Webster on merit is at best the Lions 6th best DE.   He wasn't used on Special Teams against the Jags.   If Webster is kept,  it's definitely because of potential.    It's a tough call.   The decision might even come down to whether the Lions keep Webster or Street FA OLB Brandon Copeland,  who has the versatility to play off the edge as a pass rusher and is a very good Special Teams player.   Copeland was one of the stars in the Veterans Combine back in March.

  Ideally,  from a Lions perspective,  he would end up on the team's Practice Squad.   But realistically,  he could be claimed off waivers very easily.     I'm not sure if the Jags would have interest in Webster but their waiver claim spot could give them the opportunity if they want to go in that direction.

I don't know. In hindsight it was a good move because Monroe has been injured since in signed that major deal with the Ravens.

This^. Some of these folks should go take a look at the Ravens message board some time. They aren't and haven't been too impressed with Monroe. Give it a few weeks and this board will be all over some other player. Just this last week the pitchforks were out for Joeckel, ARob, and Colvin.

well, just looked it up, and he is expected to play in the season opener.  Monroe is going to be fine.

That was a scary-looking play. He definitely has to pick things up or we will be in the market for a new LT next year. Still, I have noticed that they seem to be leaving him on his own rather than game-planning any chips from TE's or RB's I think last year it was much different. If so, although it is still very much a work in progress, and not fun to watch, he is doing better. One can hope, anyway. All said, help is not on the way, and we will just have to sit back and see how the season goes. As long as everyone else on the line continues to look good, I think we will be OK.

The guy didn't play terrible overall. People act like he's Salaam or whimper, an obvious turnstile, and this is just not the case.


He has to play better, and I expect he will.


People get perturbed because he was the 2nd pick, and that isn't relevant at this point. In today's NFL, he's a top 1/2 of the league

Was cam Bradfield at LT much worse?

We were able to run a halfway effective offense with Bradfield at LT in 2013, even getting 4 wins out of 5 IIRC.

How does he stack up to Khalif Barnes? I think Barnes has the edge there.


Honestly the best comparison to Joeckel at this time is probably Mike Pearson.

Not true. I'd say he's on par right now with Barnes, with upside. Way better than Cam.

We fail to have perspective that one of the best today, Jason Peters gives up sacks, some years over 10 a year, and he makes Pro Bowls.


There just aren't TBos's and Walter Jones around anymore

LTs are like CBs. Unfortunate for them because all it takes is one bad play and people will remember

You can't have 3 bad plays a game and allow TDs every time you step foot on the field.

You also can't allow sack/fumbles or get bull rushed into your QBs knee. That's the reality of playing the position. He can't have 2 bad plays in pass pro that allows your QB to get hit every game. He's supposed to be someone we don't talk about.


That's not us being unfair to him - that's just the nature of the beast.

He's alot better than Bradfield.

It's funny because Bradfield was atrocious as a RT... But in 2013 when he filled in for the injured Joeckel at LT, he did fine. Not a world beater, but we did OK with him there. He was no worse than the other starters.

LTs are like CBs. Unfortunate for them because all it takes is one bad play and people will remember

You can't have 3 bad plays a game and allow TDs every time you step foot on the field.

Maybe I just don't remember two years ago that well. I remember Pasztor being serviceable that year but Bradfield looking bad. There was one game in particular against Buffalo where he had one of the worst games I remember a tackle having.

  A question comes to mind regarding Tony Boselli.

 

 I certainly recall Boselli being a very rated Offensive Tackle coming into the NFL and him having a HOF caliber career.   Other than Anthony Munoz,  I'm not sure if I saw a better Offensive Tackle than Boselli in all of the years I've been watching the NFL.

Boselli was consistent immediately.

 

He hurt his knee in training camp his rookie year and did not play until the 4th game of the season, a nationally televised home game against the Green Bay Packers.

 

He went up against former Raider Sean Jones-an accomplished DE and a formidable task for most LTs.

 

Boselli absolutely dominated him.

 

I was at the game, and I recorded the game.  I still have that game on VHS.
