I'm not convinced that he's terrible, and not sure that can be argued successfully.

 

However, he doesn't have to have played terrible to expect competition next year no matter how well he plays this season.

 

Other than two bull rushes (one of which didn't even affect the QB) he's played solid this preseason.

 

We are on the same line of thinking.  He is not terrible.  He's not an elite LT and I'd argue he hasn't lived up to his draft status but he's a serviceable LT and he is still young.  He spent the majority of his early career at RT and then injured.

 

I don't see him going anywhere any time soon.

Most would agree that he has improved significantly from last year.  He's had a few bad plays in the preseason, which is to be expected. He's NOT Tony Boselli, so people who keep expecting him to become the most dominant tackle in the league are only setting themselves up to be disappointed. 

 

Even in the embarrassing plays last week, he did his job in keeping the rush off his QB.  It may not have been pretty, but it worked well enough.  In each instance, there's a teachable moment regarding his technique, and he's got some good coaches watching every bit of tape on him and working toward trying to reduce the gaffes and to become a more complete tackle. 

 

He's not a joke, although I know a few here think that's some clever word play.  Watch the entire book of work so far this preseason, and you can't walk away saying he hasn't improved his play.  Given time with this staff, he should continue to do so.  If he doesn't?  They'll find his replacement next year.

Injuries happen, it doesn't give you a free pass or stop the criticism. You can still study and get the rest of your body stronger. He's protecting our QBs blind-side and is struggling against vanilla defense. The only well known pass rusher he went up against was James Harrison, and he got destroyed by him. The Giants don't have JPP or Tuck anymore, and the Lions had their entire starting line sit out. Yet he still looks shaky, and that's an issue. After a decade of sucking, you need to open your eyes and stop feeling sorry or giving these players a pass. He's going to have the most challenging year because of our schedule, and he's not starting good.

If Caldwell knew LJ was our future LT, why would he put him out there at RT if it was so different from LT?

We'll see how he plays. I'm rooting for him heavily, because I don't want to be in the top 5 next year and having to draft another LT. He has this year to show what he can do, and the pass rushers we go against are insanely good. So its not the greatest thing in the world to see him struggle in pre season.
