FBT's Pickem

#61

Quote:I knew the Skins/Vikings game was a 1 pointer (4 me)

And in the case of pick'em players on the fence about which team to pick on the Thursday night game ... pick neither? (New Tactic?)

Now I have to ask ... Last week when TMD didn't pick the Thursday night game his 0 points weren't negative like mine were, and now this week he doesn't pick the Thursday night game (again), and now he is ahead of the majority of the players that made a choice going into the weekend.

Remember when he cried about his Thursday night game pick that "didn't" register? :whistling: ... I think it may just be a tactic. ... He is afterall ... ahead of you heading into the weekend. Is he not? no points is a better score than negative points.

Makes sense when you think about it ... except does it?
I agree...it is a tactic...not only are you not getting burned on Thursday if you miss you are also giving yourself a little flexibility for the Sunday/ Monday night games giving you the option to go high or low confidence depending how your week plays out. I asked TMD about his Thursday night omissions and he cunningly claimed he forgot. After seeing him not play Thursday for several weeks now it is clearly a strategy...nicely played TMD...interesting to see if this strategy will play out in the long run.

No it doesn't make any sense, because the points aren't "negative". You lose the matchup, you get 0 points whether you risk 16 or 0. Since everything is tabulated after the weekend anyway, being "ahead" going into Sunday doesn't matter.

All TMD is doing is losing the opportunity to gain at least 1 point.

But are you gaining flexibility for latter picks with a wider range of values to choose from for difficult/ easy to pick games?

The points do not go negative but maybe you save a higher/lower confidence point for later picks?

I am not stating this as fact. I am asking your opinions. This is my first year doing it, currently ranked 20th and brainstorming for any strategy tip I can find.

Can someone please tell me if winning % is a tie break to get into playoffs?

Also can someone tell me how many playoff slots are in this league?

If I recall correctly from past seasons when playoff games were part of the contest, everyone that participated in the regular season participated in the playoffs. In essence, the playoffs were a continuation of the regular season. Basically, a 21 week season was the formula the league used.

Based on the Group Settings for this season, I don't think that aspect of the league has changed:

Confidence Points

Yes

Spread

No

Tiebreakers

Yes

Start Week

1

Drop Scores

Drop 1 score

Deadline

5 minutes before each game

Playoffs

Yes

My pleasure, JagsQuest.

If anyone else participating in the contest has any additional information regarding your question or my reply, that would be great. It's best to clarify everything now than much later on in the season.

I thought you were good at Football stuff, anonymous2112 ... forget everything you ever knew about arithmetic, geometry, trigonometry, and mathmetonics.

Go get your countculator, or abacus so I can explain this clear cut advantage to not picking the Thursday night NFL game. I will wait.

Now that you have one of those let's get started.

Take the Jersey number of your favorite Jaguars Defensive player (don't tell me the players Jersey number that you picked) ... We will call that number (Y)

1 - Times (Y) by 3 ... example: (Y) x 3 = ?
2 - Then add Andrew Lucks Jersey number to the number you have from line 1.
3 - Next you add the number of regular season games played by all 4 AFCS teams in a season.
4 - Now subtract the Jersey number of your favorite defensive player (Y)
5 - Next you have to subtract the number of teams in the NFL
6 - Then add Peyton Mannings Jersey number.
7 - Now subtract 6 from that number (Manning - Luck = 6). We will call this number (X) (6 is also the points for a TD)
8 - Take the original (Y) number, and times it by 2 ... then subtract it from the number (X) from line 7 ... This will be known as (G)
9 - Divide (G) by 4 ... Lets call this number (N)
10 - (N) - 23 = the amount of points TMD beat me by not picking the Thursday night game 2 weeks ago.

For those to lazy to do the math the number is ---> -9 <---- Highlight between the arrows. :woot:

Now you have learned the Sammy plan to Fantasy Football success. Tongue

LMAO! Awesome post! You remind me of the greatest family member to ever grace my family. Robert Kenneth Morrison. Killed on active duty while serving on the USS Iowa. For those of you who do not who he might be you can google the" Iowa 47"! 47 great men who died for their country. Why do I make this comparison? He was a man of genius and dry wit! This post is one he could have definitely written. Go Navy! Love Jax!

Why are you not playing this week TMD!?!?!?!?!?!?

If you don't pick on Thursday you only lose 1 point. I'd be willing to bet he forgot one Thursday, then saw that it cost him next to nothing and decided to take advantage of the little known "cheat" in the system. IMO it's a cheap way to get a head start on the players that pick wrong on the Thursday game. If they took the highest number of points away from a person for not picking Thursday's game then not picking would come to an abrupt end...

He only continues to compete in the games he has a chance to win?

Next year he can claim he only lost because his dog ate his picks, Yahoo didn't register his picks, he didn't understand the scoring ... or some new reason.

I probably should have asked first ... he really didn't make this weeks picks? If he didn't, he at least deserves a participation trophy.

The player that is storming to the top, and I would put my money on to win would be Rico Cabestus. He has been stringing a lot of solid weeks together.

I am hoping to finish in the top 5, probably wont if I continue to pick as crappy as I have been as of late.

Brutal upsets - San Fran, Indy and the Thumbtacks(brutal for pick'em purposes - sweet otherwise).

The more I think I have a handle on the NFL it seems the harder I am humbled. Sitting at 56 points with 5 left for Monday night and I am totally perplexed as to who to take. Bucs and Fins is a toss up if there ever was one.

The 13-0 week that I had 2 weeks ago is becoming a distant memory. I believe I ended up with 57 points, with 2 points remaining.

While the Bucs have burned me in the contest on multiple occasions, the ultra chaos surrounding the Dolphins is the reason I'm planning on going with Tampa Bay. There's good reason I'm only using 2 points for this game. Like you said, nothing would be surprising in this game.

Bucs or Fins, Bucs or Fins, Bucs or Fins?????

Scratched and clawed my way up to 17th with a 5 shooter armed for this evening.

Could fall back further from contention or make up some much needed ground.

This game rates a migraine on the difficulty scale.

I gambled and went with the phins and 9 points - hoping the media circus didn't screw them up too badly and the bucs will find a way to shoot themselves in the foot (again.)

The Fins and you are getting 9 points. You must have teased that to the max. With 9 points I would feel really good about that bet. The computer simulation I saw had them scoring 20 points each very close the .1000th percentile. I believe the computer had Miami winning 60% of the simulations. I don't see the winner of this game winning by more than a fieldgoal

I do hope you and those computers are on to something. The Abiding Dude has been abiding near the bottom of the pack for too long in this contest!

I got'em for 5, and with TB at home, and looking at the point differentials, I'm thinking it is a coin flip pick.

This has been a very ugly week, and next week looks as crappy. I usually do better when the weather gets colder, as you can look at the weather to help pick the better team (or I should say, more adept to playing in the cold).

The game has just begun.
