There's no way of knowing that for sure.  Some of those sustained drives Carolina had in the 2nd half may not have developed, changing the entire dynamic of the game.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Quote:After one game into the season and a lot of fans want to throw in the towel. I've been reading threads and polls about which head coach to hire after Gus is fired and whether or not to fire GM Dave Caldwell & the entire roster. Are you kidding me? It was one game the team could win all the rest and win the Super Bowl (not my prediction, but anything is possible). To give up on your favorite team after only one game seems simply crazy to me. Let us first reflect on the positives of the game (from the Jaguar fans perspective).

The total net yards of both teams
Carolina 263 to Jaguars 265

-----------------------------------------

breaking it down
Rushing yards
Carolina 105 Jaguars 96

(3.0 avg to Jaguars 4.6 avg per carry)

--------------------
Passing Yards
Carolina 158 to Jaguars 169

------------------
Kickoff return
Grant 1 for 40 yards, Panthers no returns
Panthers punted 4 to Jaguars 5

-------------------------
Both teams Red Zone Efficiency 33%

--------------------------

Both teams 50% on FGs (panthers kicked 4 to Jags 2)

------------------------------

Both TJ Yeldon & D-Rob looked good rushing and catching as a good duo combo

R. Greene displayed good hands and was able to get open with 7 catches & a touchdown.

Poz had an INT, Clemons had a sack, pd, and a fg blocked, Skuta with a sack as well.

================================

Now for the real reason the team lost....

Blake Bortles with a 54.5 QB rating, 2 INTS, 22/40 183 yards 1 TD. WR Hurns with a fumble and a couple of drops, along with Robinson dropping too many targets failing to get open.

LT Young not holding up, bad play calling by the Refs, missed extra point took out some wind from the team along with missed Fgs.

It was tough to watch in the 2nd half. I am not sure what Gus could've done other than bench Bortles after the INT which might have only made things worse by putting in Henne whom wouldve been sacked more often and wouldve hurt Bortles confidence.

It wasnt a perfect game but it wasnt the worst one we've seen in a few years. Let us all calm down, relax. Step away from the keyboard before posting negative comments about moving the team to london and firing everyone... and just breathe.

I pretty much agree with this completely. The difference in the game was the pick 6, the red zone fumble and the missed extra point. The teams played very evenly for the most part. The Panthers just made the big play that they needed to win (pick 6) and the Jaguars did just enough shooting themselves in the foot (the Red Zone fumble) to lose.

I hear ya. But it's hard doing that when the outcome and feel of the game played doesn't feel any different than the years prior. Obviously, we're all going to see how it plays out, but it's really depressing when you see how poorly Carolina played and we still couldn't do much at all. I'm not in the group that wants to fire Bradley already because that would do more harm than good right now. But coaching is definitely an issue with the play calling. I just don't get it..

Quote:Seriously. How often do we see/hear/read "an effective running game is a young QBs best friend?" I was certain when Kuechly went down (which sucks because I like how this kid plays) we'd be even more effective on the ground. But no...in typical Jaguars fashion, the powers-that-be decide to having Blake throwing the rock 40 times under the misguided impression that he's suddenly Drew Brees. It would have made a wee bit more sense if the run wasn't effective...but it was.

I'm honestly surprised this facet isn't being talked about more.
This is a huge disappointment to me. All this offseason I heard about carrying 4 or 5 running backs, loading up on the line, using a power run game and using multiple TE sets. Then I see we ran the ball 21 times and the qb had 4 of those runs. Not saying Blake played well (that's another conversation), but my goodness why did we give up on the run and our average per attempt was 4.6. Meanwhile the panthers had a whooping 3.0 average on 35 carries. We were never so far behind in the game where we needed to abandon that faucet of the game.

Quote:It was good play and bad play. Dropped passes by trying to catch with their pads and not hands. Run game looked good but they seemed to stop running after halftime. We need to figure something out at left tackle or that's gonna be a problem all season. Not only against Hou. D played good even with alot of guys out. Missed FG hurt and then missed extra point. The game was even as far as stats. I was proud but we all know that there is always a time in the game when we just start losing and we don't get it back. It felt that way when it turned 10-9 and then pick 6 sealed the deal. That is what makes us mad the most. We all know that moment b/c it's been that way for a long time. We have got to change that moment or it will be a wasted season again. Then everybody will want some people gone.

I hear you on that, I was worried about the LT when it was Luke but with Young it might be a very long season indeed if GM Dave Caldwell doesn't sign or trade for a LT.

Quote:That play where Greene sustained the concussion was garbage and I couldn't believe it when he made that throw.  The Panther defense was taking off lineman's helmets and jumping routes and that was a play call?  They got the kid killed.
The sound that hit made it was hard to watch, glad he's okay (kind of).

Quote:I think Yeldon and the defense are both huge bright spots for this team. I actually think we stand a lot against Miami but Bortles and the receivers have to play a lot better.

I mean it's only been one week but the Jaguars are currently ranked as the 5th best Defense in the NFL after going against the Panthers (whom a few claim had a bad offense but stat wise they were better than average last season & in this preseason).  That was without Marks, Branch, Fowler Jr., Ziggy Hood, etc.

I would like to see TJ Yeldon get a few more chances this Sunday as he was fun to watch.

It confused most of the fan base that is for sure.  Going into the game most people knew that the Panthers weakness was their run defense.  The Jaguars have like 5 RBs on the roster why did they not run more when they had success coming back from Half Time down by one point?   I am still scratching my head trying to figure out why.

Quote:By getting healthy, I'm specifically talking about Getting Marks back.  That's a huge void in the defense.
I thought they expect him to play against Miami?  I mean I would rather he wait another week and be sure he's healthy than to rush in and risk reinjury.

Quote:If Marks was on the field, we still get the big fat Loss. Marks would not have made the loss feel any better.
He certainly wouldn't have helped the Offense out unless he played WR or QB as those were the most used in the 2nd half.  He could've caused a turnover or reduced Carolinas points though.

It was awful.  Going back I think the second interception where our lineman had his helmet ripped off was brutal as well.  Made me miss Boselli.  He would have jumped up and opened a can of whoop.

Quote:Thanks for showing us all those stats! However, you left off the one and only truly relevant stat... namely, the final score, 23-9 panthers. The panthers don't even have one of the better offenses either; and please, don't insult anyone's intelligence saying they had a 'top five' preseason offense. Repeat to yourself... o f f s e a s o n.

No, more than anything, the Jags gave this one away. They went out there and repeatedly shot themselves in the foot with dropped passes, fumbling, missed field goal and extra point, and interceptions. Take away some of those blunders and the game outcome is different.

To add insult to injury, our LT (who was already of questionable merit) went down with an ankle injury (again) and his backup is the laughing stock of the NFL. I heard that they kept Sam Young for his size... but you've got to be kidding me; the man is awful!

Actually, our defense was (contrary to what we witnessed during the preseason, once again) pretty good. But they just aren't good enough to compensate for an offense that can't seem to get out of it's own way!

Oh is the final score an important one?

Wait a minute, hear me out, what if the Jaguars use Poz as a TE?   He seemed to show great hands in that INT!  (joke)

Hey they thought about Tyson as a FB, so why not?

If this team had Boselli it wouldve been a win this week!

Yeah I thought we would see a jumbo type of package with tons of runs, but the Offense didn't really go south until the 2nd half.

The Jaguars have the 5th best defense after one week, but the Offense is ranked 25th (Carolina's Offense is ranked 26th).

As I had mentioned in a different thread the two teams were a lot alike, and the stats reflected that.  The key difference was the turnovers...You cant have 3 or more turnovers in a game and expect to win.

Quote:You're right, its only week 1, but it's been more then just "one game" of this for the Jags. 7-25 over Gus Bradley's time here. Sunday looked like more of the same, a team that was sloppy and couldn't get out of it's own way, the improvement isn't as drastic as it should be in year 3 when the head coach says "we're built". This is why fans are disgruntled.

For the Seahawks it's just one game, they've proven themselves. The Jags haven't done that yet.

Stop saying this bs. Yes, he's 7-26, but the first season we blew up the entire tram and started fresh. Idk [BLEEP] some of you expect his record to be. This season is where we should expect a decent season, stop talking about 2013 and 2014, we knew those years were going to be like that.

You predicted seven wins over two seasons with a majority of the games non-competitive?

The first year you knew there were going to be bumps in the road, not sure people expected the team to be historically bad, worse then expansion teams bad. Still, most fans gave them a pass for the season.

The 2nd year, the team looked slightly improved in certain areas, they didn't get blown out by double digits on a regular basis but they still looked sloppy and no where near competitive with good NFL teams, they still couldn't get out of their own way with dumb mistakes.  They end up winning fewer games then they did the 1st year.  In year 2 of what was proclaimed a 3 year build you should see significant improvement.

This year, the head coach proclaims "We're built" & then they come out week 1 and it looks like more of the same against a bad Carolina team.

Maybe you're happy with 7-26 but you should be able to understand why fans patience is running thin.  I don't think good NFL head coaches go 7-26 to start their careers & you'd hope that even with blowing up a team and re-building from the ground up the GM would be able to field a semi-competitive team that improves year-to-year, not one that has been historically bad over that stretch.

No HC in the history of the NFL has started as bad as Bradley (7-26) at the beginning of his HC career and won a Super Bowl.  I just don't see how people believe in him so much that you are confident he will rewrite the history books and bring a Lombardi trophy to Jax.  There is nothing special about him as a coach.

Please don't misunderstand my stance on the season's expectations based on my thread.  I am saying to the fan base calm down with the fire everyone thread after one game into the regular season, but if the season ends with three or four wins like the last two, I too would be calling for Gus Bradley & possibly GM Dave Caldwell's dismissal.

I don't know any head coach in the NFL that could go 10 wins out of 48 (20% winning) after three years and expect to keep their jobs.

That being said I dont think the team will only get three wins despite the poor peformance against Carolina I expect the team to win at least seven games this year if not more.  The Head Coach Gus Bradley said the team has been built that will own the AFC South this year and more to come, so please dont make excuse threads about the roster.  This is the team (roster) that he wanted!

I agree with this.  I've never said to fire everyone but they should definitely be on the hot seat.

It's funny that some people want us to forget about the first two seasons but like you said, this is the way they chose to build the team and this is their roster.  This is a results based league, the job of the coach and GM is to have a competitive team on the field every year.  You can't absolve them of responsibility for something they built.
