College Basketball; the wholly unofficial thread

Quote:If they would have hit their free throws they would have won by 8. Julius Randle is going to be a BEAST!!!!! Agreed. If they can get Walker that will be HUGE. He is probably the most athletic guy in all of college basketball and they are going to need his height and length come March. It also helps that he and Hill already have chemistry playing together. Quote:The rule brings basketball closer to what it was meant to be. The NBA and College basketball became a completely different game over the past 15-20 years. The level of physical play teams got away with was to much. Not how basketball was meant to be played. I understand the reasoning behind it, but it had the effect of slowing down the game. This concerns me because VCU uses tempo as an advantage when it is playing teams with more talent than them, which is pretty often when they are playing ACC teams and / or in a post-season tournament. Now with these new rules in place, the team cannot drive the tempo up as much as it used to, at least that was the effect that I noticed. All it seems that they have done is slow the game down to something akin to an NBA pace.

But I just don't watch college ball anymore. Really, I'm just not into much sports-wise other than college and NFL football. Back when I was living in the Philly burbs, which was almost 23 years ago now (damn time flies), I was glued to the couch year round watching sports. NBA, NHL, MLB, NFL and college hoops. Philadelphia had an unofficial 'league' they called The Big Five. I guess it still exists. It was the five major universities around Philly...Temple, Penn, Saint Joes, Villanova and LaSalle. Back then they were all relevant and at least 2 or 3 were always in the top 20. Man I couldn't get enough college hoops. Now my interest as just waned. I start watching again around March, for obvious reasons. What does all this mean? Hell, I don't know. ![]() Quote:Not really an indictment of college hoops, I guess just more of a change in direction of my viewing habits. But I just don't watch college ball anymore. Really, I'm just not into much sports-wise other than college and NFL football. Probably means that your dum, but let's not dwell on the obvious. I'm with you though on the waning desire to watch sports though. I watch NFL and NCAA football regularly, but when it comes to basketball if it ain't my alma mater playing, I don't really care. Maybe sports is really for a younger generation now or something but it really doesn't appeal to me the way it did. Funny thing is, football is my sport. I've watched it all my life, played it as I could, and even coach it now but nothing gets me emotional like watching the VCU basketball team play. I was so wound up after that win Tuesday night, I don't think I even attempted to get into my bed until after midnight. I couldn't even begin to say when I got to sleep. It's just a different emotional investment for me.

College basketball has changed quite a bit in the last 20 years. Mainly due to AAU. It used to be that college basketball players were strictly high school coached, mostly recruited locally and earned their chops on the collegiate hardwood for four years at a chance to be drafted with an education to boot. Now with the growth of the AAU, colleges serve little more than developmental leagues or holding areas for the NBA. The hungry ambitious kid working for a future through college has been replaced by highly coached and scouted NBA talent with an air of entitlement and full expectations of wealth, endorsements, and entourages.

I feel like you'll still find that player, but it won't be at any of the "big schools". If you watch the mid-majors, I feel like you'll see both the type of player and the play that you are describing.

You're right, which is why it's exciting to see VCU, or Butler, or Gonzaga make it so deep into the tournament. They're typically viewed as the underdogs but really represent true collegiate competition. I still root for the Cats, but watching them isn't as exciting as it used to be. Quote:Well, you won't feel that way for long. If Calipari follows suit, he'll drift out of town in a few years and Kentucky will be mired in NCAA sanctions and investigations. So you've got that going for you, which is nice. You're wrong, but I don't feel like debating this again. Quote:You're wrong, but I don't feel like debating this again. I often am. Quote:I often am. It's gotten to be part of my personality. I apologize for sounding rude. This is one of those subjects that I've debated exhaustively on the previous board and elsewhere. But now that the box is opened I'm sure it will continue. Quote:I apologize for sounding rude. This is one of those subjects that I've debated exhaustively on the previous board and elsewhere. Shame.Seriously can't figure out what his deal is man. It's so frustrating watching him. Either way, if the Gators can get fully healthy and all of those dummys that got suspended come back soon, we should have a very competitive team. Hopefully... This football season has sucked to epic proportions. I need something to root and be happy about besides the Blackhawks.

So...sorry to be pedantic and predictable, but how do the Canes look this year? Last year was one of their best seasons, if I recall. But I know a lot of that had to do with Shane Larkin and he's in the NBA now.
