Quote:I think this proves that the Bucs really suck...The Bucs are beating the Saints 23-7. So the Saints suck!
Titans didnt win. But sadly I think you can make an argument that Mariota's first two games have been as good if not better than Bortles best two games in his career.

His first game was more of a treatise on just how well things can go if you have the luckiest three hours of your life on a football field. This week he was essentially shut down until the game was out of hand and then, as often happens, he got some garbage time production. I'm not convinced on Bortles, but right now he looks legitimately like a front line QB, not just someone getting lucky in a game that they only throw something like 15 passes. If not for that 2nd 50+ yard TD on 3rd down by Benjamin, its a one possession game with over 2 minutes to go with all the momentum in the Titan's favor. Sure he struggled, but his offensive line was hurt and they couldn't slow down the Browns pass rush. For him to bounce back in the face of adversity and almost bring his team back shows a lot about his football character. He still had 250 yards and 2 TDs and is the only rookie QB ever besides Marino with 6 TDs in his first two games. Its sad that on his worst day Mariota was still better than Bortles' best.

Maybe a bit hyperbolic, but nonetheless the forum would be raving over a similar performance from Bortles. Mind you its Bortles' second season and Mariota just made his second start.
Quote:Maybe a bit hyperbolic, but nonetheless the forum would be raving over a similar performance from Bortles. Mind you its Bortles' second season and Mariota just made his second start. A bit hyperbolic is an understatement. Mariota was utter garbage except for some garbage time drives. People blame Blake when his receivers drop perfect passes and his oline gets steamrolled. Quote:A bit hyperbolic is an understatement. Mariota was utter garbage except for some garbage time drives. People blame Blake when his receivers drop perfect passes and his oline gets steamrolled. Titan's receivers dropped passes too, and their offensive line was much worse. They gave up like 7 sacks, many of which Mariota had no time to do anything at all. I don't understand why those are valid excuses for Bortles but not any other QB? Every team in the league struggles with protection issues and drops. Doesn't change the fact that Mariota has shown more potential in 2 games than Bortles ever has.

We've seen the two TD with multiple turnovers game from him multiple times. Right now he's in the middle of a two TD no turnover game, and while it looked good for a while he's been absolutely killed by drops in the second half. Still, having a better game than Mariota's game today, in which he never made a positive play that impacted the outcome of the game. We show less advertisements to registered users. This is the best he has looked and he is in his 2nd season as a pro and he only looks marginally better than a guy making only his 2nd pro start. Sure, Bortles is playing better than him today (if only marginally so), but you're missing the big picture.

We've seen games this good or better from him multiple times. That's why I keep saying it's clear you've never watched him play. Quote:No, this isn't the best he's looked. You mean the guy coming in to today with a 12:19 TD:INT ratio (5 pick 6), 58% completion rate, 6 YPA, and a career QB rating of 68.4? Yeah, I've seen plenty.

I think you've just been so abused by Henne and Gabbert that any hint of decent QB play looks amazing to you.
Quote:I think you've just been so abused by Henne and Gabbert that any hint of decent QB play looks amazing to you. When did I say he was amazing at all? I just said we've seen play on a level above what Mariota displayed today from Bortles multiple times already. I didn't even touch on the turnovers that were nullified by penalties that Mariota committed today. If you think Mariota is playing in a way we haven't seen out of Bortles under even worse circumstances then you're mixed up, and this isn't to say that I think Bortles is special, because at this point I don't think he is, he's just a guy that looks like he could be decent with years of experience. I feel about the same with Mariota, could be decent with years of experience, won't be Tommy Terrific's heir.

Doesn't change the fact that Mariota has shown more potential in 2 games than Bortles ever has. The Jags are Number 2 in the league in drops since Bortles has been a QB. Number 2. So only one other team has a more valid reason to complain about drops. In fact, the Jags almost DOUBLED the Titans drops last year. (32 vs 17) And that's only straight drops, not balls that most NFL receivers would catch but would be difficult. |
