PFF Grades

#41

Ok that is it I am going to start drinking and check out of the Holiday Inn Express because all this expert analysis I am getting from the forum is better suited for people smoking crack...going downtown to sleep in a box.

Sure am glad the temperature has been dropping at night lately

I agree, it's another tool.  Teams may use PFF for other things, not just their rankings.  For instance, they may have a way of organizing certain stats/situations.  Ultimately the team relies on their own tape study to determine who did what right and who won their matchups obviously.

I think someone seeing Linder as an overall negative score will simply IGNORE what pff has to say about it because everyone else I've heard that's watched the tape says he did really well against Suh.

I'm sure you can gather some decent data from watching the game film, but if you don't know the play called or the protections or exactly everyone's responsibilties you can only anaylyze accuately to an extent.

exactly.

even boselli himself said that sometimes it's tough to say how the DBs did because the coverages and responsibilities are oftentimes very difficult to understand unless you are part of the DB room and know exactly who is responsible for what.....

which means that the PFF grades may be completely pointless.

NFL teams maybe use it because it provides a valuable service to them or it helps them understand their own stats better?

All I have said is I don't personally derive any benefit from PFF's grades.I find them useless in determining player performance in games.

My feeling is the teams that use it probably use their info as a launch point for their own study or as a check against their own study.

I am actually surprised by Center's grade since he was going against Suh! same thing with Beadles vs Suh.  I mean for the most part they made Suh a mute issues during the game, probably blocked him the best he has in a while.

Sadly they mentioned it as if Suh had a bad day instead of Jaguars doing a good job blocking.

Odrick did look like a beast towards the end of that game.

I'm not gonna say I don't use PFF a lot, I like their rankings and explanations for things

But Bortles' rating simply makes no sense to me. Is it even taking his drops into account?

So somehow overnight Wisniewski went from -5.0 to -1.5 and people wonder why PFF grades are hard to take seriously

Quote:Yea really bad analysis no wonder only 17 of NFL teams pay to use it. If it was really good more would be using it.

Are these payments directly from the team presidents, or just someone associated with the team? If (say) Jim McNally took out a paid subscription would that result in PFF claiming that the Patriots pay to use it?

Hmmmmm
PFF is trash. Me thinks they used the TV broadcast to make the initial grades then decided to change them when the all 22 film came out.

That wouldn't explain the dramatic change in lineman grades. You don't need the all 22 for them.

True. It would explain the change in grades for Robinson, Hurns, and Bortles. Maybe they just make it up as they go?

Here is my guess. Some low paid (or unpaid) internet guy does the initial grade based on just his own opinion. Likely why the grades are so out of whack from what everyone saw. Then a few more sets of eyeballs watch the game and they adjust the grade according.

What I find funny is how many people treat PFF grades like they are some actual statistic instead of what they actually are. One person's (or a handful at best) opinion.
