The way our defense is designed

#1

The way our defense is designed is all wrong to stop a team like the Patriots.  It is well known that the Jaguars, like the Seahawks, want to have larger cornerbacks.  Any team that builds that type of defense will have a severe matchup problem against the Pats.  New England comes in with small, quick WRs.   Large CBs just aren't going to be able to cover those guys.   What we need is at least one smaller, quicker CB who can press a guy like Edelman.   Othewise, those small New England WRs, will always get open.   We don't have a single guy who is physically capable of press covering Julian Edelman.   He's too quick for any of our DBs.

Of course, that's just one reason out of a dozen that we lost the game, but still, it's worth considering.

Except that the Seahawks were right on the door step of winning the Super Bowl until their OC went full [BLEEP].

You mean the CBs 10 yards away from the WR every play isn't a good idea?

Not it's actually designed to stop teams like the Patriots. The problem is players playing out of position and playing fundamental football. It the jags 4-3 over/under scheme, it is essential the LB and DBs communicate and our in proper position. Here are two examples. The first is proper position for the safety and LB in over position. Look at Cyp. I know...he is actually in position. The second is an example of out of position. Notice the back up safety too far out of position and Poz trying to cover that ground himself. This has been a problem for some time and exactly why we get burned in the middle. The CB's should play press forcing everything inside while the safety and outside LBs trail with MLB in middle zone. Think of it like a funnel, forcing everything into a little tube in the middle where the D can swarm. It is seceptable ti big plays on the outside if your press technique is lacking, but should never get as exposed as it has in the middle. This is a DB and LB deficiency.

I would say the Seahawks lost the Super Bowl because they couldn't stop Tom Brady with the game on the line.   They were ahead 21-10 in the 4th quarter.  New England scored 14 points in the 4th quarter.

Game stats:

Julian Edelman, WR, 5-10, 200 lb, 9 catches

Danny Amendola, WR 5-11, 190 lb, 6 catches

Shane Vereen, RB, 5-10, 205 lb, 11 catches

Notice a theme there?   Quick little guys.  Very hard for larger CBs to cover guys like that.

So with the game on the line, did Seattle's big corners manage to cover those quick little guys?   No.

Its over move on, we didnt even have all our DBs that game, we were playing Payton Thomas who was just on the PS and Nick Marshall who was a QB a few months ago, we had no chance

In your 1st picture, we're in cover 3.

In your 2nd picture, we're in cover 2, where the Sam didn't bump Gronk and Pox didn't get enough depth to cover the deep middle of the field.

Poz was so bad Sunday..

Actually, I feel better today knowing there were only a dozen reasons why we lost the game.  My calculation was at ~ 25 reasons why we lost.

The Seahawks defense's weakness is the short middle and the seams if the LBs don't carry the receivers to the safety.

They're banking on teams being impatient and forcing throws. If a team is patient and the receivers go upfield on every catch instead of attemting to juke the defense, success can be had vs them.

I think it was a perfect storm.   Rebuilding team that was massively beset with injuries with a defense that was not designed to stop a team with small quick offensive players, vs the world champions who are all urinated off at the world and want to just pummel everyone to prove a point.

Ouch ouch ouch

On to Indianapolis.

I would say, if you're going to give up 5 yard passes, then the Pats will throw 5 yard passes right on down the field and you will never stop them.   At some point, you have to man up and press those WRs, but you can't do that with bigger, slower CBs.   New England's offense is designed to slice a soft zone to bits.  It's death by a thousand cuts.  The only way to stop that is to get up on them and press them, otherwise, they will throw underneath all day and never ever punt.   You need smaller, quicker CBs to do that successfully.   Defenses seem to be designed these days to stop bigger WRs like Brandon Marshall, and that means they cannot cover Julian Edelman or Danny Amendola, especially if someone as accurate as Tom Brady is throwing the ball.

IIRC the 2nd picture is the same play that Daryl Smith for Baltimore picked off Brady last year. Poz has got to drop deeper.

So the question is, do you wanna stop the Pats and be at a disadvantage vs other teams, or do you wanna be budget equipped vs the other 30 teams and take your chances vs the Pats?
