Question for the board
|
I really hate to introduce this topic at this point, but the results of this season lead me to it, to be honest. To me, such an inquiry signals a surrender of the season. While we are in a relatively weak division, we have not proven we can consistently beat weakened teams, as evidenced the past two games. I don't think the games are going to get any easier from this point on.
What is the biggest draftable need on this roster? I emphasize draftable need, because based upon the mood of the fans, the biggest need is getting rid of Bradley. But I am looking for on field needs. If the draft were tomorrow, what would be your priorities? To me, I might be tempted to draft LT first, because that seems to be a deep and talented position, and we need to ensure Bortles is protected.. But the more pressing needs might be along the defensive front seven. I might dedicate my first four picks to that part of the team. We could use at least one DE, one DT (maybe 2), and at least one LB. We have the QB now. He is developing nicely, despite the representations of those who want to nit pick his performance yesterday. We finally seem to have the receivers. Both Hurns and Robinson are on pace to eclipse 1000 yards receiving. We have a decent RB in Yeldon. We need to find a way to get him some space. There is no excuse for such little success running yesterday against such a weak team against the run. But as I and others have pointed out, we have no playmakers on the defensive side of the ball at the moment. If you want to be generous, you could list telvin Smith and Colvin as playmakers. But aside from that...nothing. Fowler was supposed to be that guy, but he got hurt, Marks had developed into that guy, but he blew out a knee at the end of last year and still doesn't seem too close to returning, and who knows how effective he will be when he does return? In the meantime, Alualu is his same inept self, Miller hasn't done much, and Bennett, despite showing potential in preseason, has been a non factor thus far. We need a viable replacement for Poz at LB, and we need better depth at all three positions. I think if we had more catalysts along the front seven, the past two games might have turned out differently. Neither Indy nor Tampa had overpowering offensive lines or particularly imposing passing games. Yet a 40 year old QB picked us apart and we got little pressure on him, and a team with a rookie QB was only sacked once, IIRC, and they ran the ball down our throats for over 180 yards. So what would you prioritize next April? Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

Elite, true one on one, 2 on 1, 3 on 1, disruptive D linemen
Biggest hole No stud up front (Sans Marks, who's MIA. and Fowler, unknown)
Success is a journey, not a destination. Go all out Mighty Jaguars.
No beef, no team
Lines bad Team worse

The biggest need by far is an elite pass rusher.
The Jags aren't going to invest another top draft pick at LT when they've got so much invested in Joeckel already. If he can become an average LT, that's good enough. Although he's disappointed so far, he's still young and with a good couch he could improve. Second biggest need is probably a MLB.

Probably another DE. Fowler's a question mark and even if he hits, I would love to have a Freeney/Mathis type combo for the next 10 years. Other than that, I'm always for drafting offensive linemen.
The biggest need is athletes. Telvin and Arob are the only ones Dave has drafted (Chris Smith doesn't count).
Hard to say isn't it? One week the D looks like it needs help, another week it looks like the O needs help. I'd go with MLB...that may be the biggest hole
Can I take a Tuck/Strahan/Umenyiora type combo instead?
Freeney/Mathis, finesse pass rushers who give up 375...

I wouldn't prioritize any position in the first round. I would take the very best player I could find.
But to answer the question, it seems like the answer changes with every game. Yesterday, with Poz out, our undrafted rookie MLB got abused to the point where we went nickle defense to open the second half. So based on yesterday's game, we have a dire need at linebacker.
It's not about the biggest draftable need, because we have several holes that need to be filled equally as bad. It's about where we pick, and since it looks like we will be picking top 3 again, here are our options:
1. Bosa 2. Ramsey 3. Hargreaves 4. Trade down if we are picking 1 or 2 and Goff is still on the board and someone is willing to sell the house for him. In that order of prospect imo. Any one of them would help us immensely. Bosa is the best prospect in this draft which is why I would take him over anyone given the chance. It would also beef up our D-Line to the point where, playing next to a healthy Marks and Fowler, we should be able to dominate up front, which will make the current players in our secondary look a lot better. If Bosa is gone, Ramsey is the prototypical DB this defense is built for. He's straight out of a Pete Carroll wet dream. Hargreaves is a bit undersized but he's the best corner prospect since Patrick Peterson and a true shutdown guy. In the trade down scenario, if we go into the mid-bottom top 10, then our options should be: 1. Jaylon Smith 2. Myles Jack 3. Robert Nkemdiche 4. Ronnie Stanley 5. Laremy Tunsil A lot of people would suggest Treadwell as a WR prospect but in my opinion he is too similar to A-Rob. imo there is no true top 10 receiver in this draft and no sure fire no.1 like Cooper last year. Either Jaylon Smith or Myles Jack would be a massive upgrade at LB, either inside or out. Can't go wrong with either one. I'm more partial to Jack because he's a super athlete. Smith is a better pass rusher though. Nkemdiche is a bit redundant because we have Marks but even still you can't go wrong beefing up the line. I don't want to draft one of the LTs but if none of the other players I listed are available when we pick (unlikely) then we should go ahead and take one. "A man with no sauce is lost.

1. Defense Tackle
1. Linebacker 1. Defense End 4. Guard 4. Tackle 4. Center 7. Safety We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Quote:The secondary, interior, and MLB. Very good player that can play the run well and rush the passer well enough and provides energy and a leader on your defense, but isn't a Von Miller/Justin Houston/DeMarcus Ware type that is going to rack up the sacks all game. Fowler needs a running mate which is why I think lucking into Bosa is the best thing that could happen. Fowler will help Bosa and Bosa will help Fowler. "A man with no sauce is lost.

When I start thinking of who to draft, the first thing I ask is who are we going to lose.
Poz and Marcedes come to mind immediately. If Poz had been there yesterday, the Jaguars would have won that game against Tampa Bay. I think that it is obvious that the weakest position group is LB. Hopefully Dave signs Poz to a 2-3 year deal and drafts a MLB. Not sure where the Jaguars will be drafting, but if the team drafts in the top 5 again it will probably go LT or pass rusher to maximize value. I would prefer to trade back and pick up that MLB. Although I think it is still possible the Jaguars will be drafting in the 10-15 range. But I think definitely the Jaguars need to use multiple draft picks at LB next year.
It also depends on who will be available during Free Agency.
Our main problems during the entire season at the moment have been the pass rush and the run blocking on the offense. I would address the front 4 of the defense first, we need someone really dominant there, be it through FA, draft or even both. Then the linebackers, need to implement that too. And finally the OL, need someone to take over Beadles and if possible a great Center as well. We need to spend well in those area in FA and draft well. Give someone dominant to this defensive front 7 and someone who can help the running game and we are there. With a new coach of course.
I hope they spend a truck load of FA money on the offensive line, don't care what position. Then, I hope they draft a pass rusher, secondary player (don't care what position), and LB, in that order.

DE and MLB should be priorities. Fowler will be like having a new first rounder next year but I think we should stack up on that position. The lack of pass rush is scary this year.
MLB should be address, Poz goes down and we give up hundreds of yards to running backs. Poz is getting old and isn't going to be around much longer, draft someone to play behind him next year and take over. OL needs improving. I'm not sold on Wiz, Beadles or Joeckel. Parnell looks good, Cann looks like he could be good and Linder is great.
Definitely defensive lineman. I would honestly draft 3 in a row next year. Tired of Branch, Alualu, and Clemons. They should also have Marks just sit the rest of this year and be fully ready for next season with Fowler.
Sign LBs. Offense is actually really solid and not a lot missing, they just need time to grow together. Beadles can leave tho!
Shock the world
Quote:Telvin may look like an athlete, but he sucked yesterday, especially against the run.Yeah. He looks too lean, skinny to play LB in the NFL. He doesn't fit the mold of a Seahawk LB. Try him at strong safety. |
