Grossest Injury Ever?

#21

Quote:Tavian Banks was not enjoyable to watch. I think he put his leg on backward after that play. Sick

I saw that one live in Atlanta. It's still the prime example of why players who injure other players on illegal hits should be suspended for as many games without pay as the injured player misses due to the injury.

Eh id still put them behind the Malarchuk injury.

#1 Malarchuk

#2 Lattimore

#3 Prothro

#4 Livingston
There is no way you can say Lattimore was grosser than Rashad Johnson. I only count bloody injuries as gross, not any injury that is hard to watch.

Based on the description of Malarchuk I have to say he wins the gross injury contest in all professional sports. But if you only count football players are any of them grosser than Johnson?

The hardest injury I had to watch live was Ed McCaffrey because I did not see Theismann get hurt.

That is a matter of opinion then. I think watching bones crack like sticks is more disgusting than seeing blood. I bleed when I shave sometimes. I get bloody noses when the air is too dry sometimes. I've never cracked my tib / fib in half.

The Prothro injury is bad. That was such a sad story, too, because he had 1st round pick potential. I still say McCallum's injury needs to be #1 when talking about broken legs. You can watch the play and have time to say "please don't bend anymore.... please don't bend anymore..... OMG."

Maybe it is because when I broke my left ulna and radius near the wrist, I did not think it was gross even though the x-rays were not needed to diagnose it. (The bones had to be set, but no surgery was required.) Of course, I totally agree watching bones snap in two is ugly when the fractures are as bad as mine were - especially during the slow-motion replays.

You do realize the NFL started doing that because of concussions, right?  They never even thought about suspending players because of knee injuries.

I did not see it. What happened?

You joke about people's IQ in another thread and then honestly believe this?

Do you realize how fine the line is between "legal" and "illegal" hits? On top of that, do you realize how many "illegal hits" are unintentional and happen because a WR turns his head at the last second?

Let me get this right...... if a DB mistimes a play and the WR turns his head at the last second, leading to helmet to helmet contact, and then that WR ends up paralyzed, the DB should be forced to retired?

Would an illegal hit that gives Cecil Shorts a concussion be more punishable (because he would miss more games) than an illegal hit that gives Blackmon a concussion?

One of the dumbest proposals I've heard, and this is coming from the guy that wants to see take some snaps.

In the case of the Banks hit it was intentional on the knee out of bounds and crippled him for life. But don't let that get in the way of your rant.

How do you know it was intentional? Because he was hit out of bounds? Sorry, but a lot of guys are just trying to push the guy out of bounds and get there a second too late. I don't think they are always trying to target the knees either.

What do you mean by "crippled him for life"? Does Banks now walk with a limp or need a mobility device and have ADA protection? I highly doubt it.

So now your rule only implies to certain situations? What about the situation I brought up.

Yes actually, he walks with a cane.

What about it? It was an intentional low hit out of bounds that ended the guys career. If it was 2012 instead of 1999 then Buchanon would've been suspended multiple games and fined hundreds of thousands of dollars. Big difference between the bang bang play on the field vs targeting a guys knee out of bounds. About the only thing close was James Harrison belting Massoquoi or McCoy a few years back. Headhunting at its finest and worthy of expulsion.

My situation is not unrealistic. It would be an "illegal play" by definition. Do you agree that in my situation, a non-intentional "bang bang" play would be worthy of banning the guy from ever playing in the NFL again? Personally, I say no. Suspensions should be looked at on a case-by-case basis. "Eye for an eye" is not successful.

And even if "Eye for an eye" were successful, damaging a guys eye by intentionally gouging it with a stick shouldn't receive the same punishment as accidentally elbowing a guy in the eye, even if they both result in permanent vision loss.

Your proposal has flaws.

That is sad. It makes you wonder how many other former NFL players need mobility assistance after illegal hits shorten their careers.

Intent is the issue. That's why things like the clothesline, the headslap, low tackles on passers, peel back blocks and the chop block were all outlawed. Accidental things happen in the field of play and get appropriate penalty there, but the league is reviewing everything and if they determine intent beyond accidental then the guy should get what he gave.

At the same time, it really looks like the league is finally giving these things the close scrutiny they deserve and, to protect their wallets, are forcing some changes.

On the list of grossest injuries, Lattimore isn't even sniffing top 10.

They've suspended James Harrison for one, but there was no correlation to how long the guys he walloped were out.
