Considering the average point differential in the NFL, losing by a FG or a TD is pretty much the standard.  Again, Lose big, lose small, win small, win big.  The team isn't getting blown out of games like they were a year or two ago except for the NE game, which is the anomaly. 

 

The team had opportunities last year and failed, but in most instances, they were done by the 4th quarter.  That's not the case this season. 

 

It's frustrating for fans because the wins aren't coming, but considering the circumstances in each of the losses this year, we're not that far from hopefully turning the corner.  It may or may not happen for Gus.  We'll see what transpires the rest of the way.  Nobody is lauding his coaching prowess at this point. 

 

I don't think Gus is trying to "save face" at all.  I think he recognizes that the mistakes that are costing them games are unacceptable.  I think he's probably more frustrated than Joe 6 Pack sitting on his couch calling into shows complaining about how he needs to be fired.  At the end of the day, this is his livelihood.  If the players aren't taking the coaching and applying what they're being told to do to improve their play, there's only so much a coach can do.  If they look great in practices, and seem to be getting it, but they freeze up when the lights are on, there's only so much coaching is going to do to fix that.

 

Bradley's job is absolutely in jeopardy.  If the team doesn't start to show it's turning the corner this year, he's done.  Simple as that.

No, I didn't hear it.  Based on what I've seen in this thread, Lageman was absolutely expressing an opinion, and what he was arguing with Dempsey about on the show today is no different than the discussion they've been having after every loss this year on any shows.  The fans call in demanding Gus be fired, and because they're the "paying customers" they somehow think their opinion should carry more validity than anyone else.  "Paying customers" shouldn't dictate what happens with the coaching situation here.  The only thing that matters is where the team is at when it's time for those in a position to do so make a decision.  The last time "paying customers" had any influence over franchise decisions, Weaver fired Tom Coughlin.  Ask him how much he regrets that decision today.  When he sold the team, he said it was the worst decision he ever made as an owner.  No, I'm not comparing Gus to Tom.  I'm simply saying that personnel decisions, whether on the field or with the staff, won't be dictated by fans complaining about it in the local media.  I'm fairly certain that was Jeff's point as well.

I heard that particular part of the segment.

 

Lageman's tone was almost shockingly harsh, certainly defensive.

 

I get his point about there being areas of improvement (i.e. Bortles and the passing game).

 

Part of the problem of his argument is not once did he articulate how/when the incremental improvements that we ARE seeing (or SHOULD see, or in his case IS seeing) would turn into wins for the team.  If the audience is having problems with what they are seeing from the team, and he is the analyst that doesn't see this team as being too far away, then tell the great unwashed among us what the team is missing to turn these close losses into wins against vulnerable teams.  Tell us what it will take for this team to get over the hump.  If you, as an analyst, don't offer the answer to that basic question and the reasoning behind it, then there is no reason to trash the fans (that one in particular) for wanting a change at coach.
