Quote:Yep, such a ridiculous take from a member of the Jax media. I'm not one to sit here in complain after every loss but I have no problem with fans who do, considering the ineptitude of this team over the last 10-15 years how can you blame them?
what I didn't like was how he told Dempsey to stop talking about the negatives and to basically stop taking calls from the people who want to focus on the negatives. That's Dempseys job and Jeff was really going after him about it and the fans

I heard that particular part of the segment.

Lageman's tone was almost shockingly harsh, certainly defensive.

I get his point about there being areas of improvement (i.e. Bortles and the passing game).

Part of the problem of his argument is not once did he articulate how/when the incremental improvements that we ARE seeing (or SHOULD see, or in his case IS seeing) would turn into wins for the team.  If the audience is having problems with what they are seeing from the team, and he is the analyst that doesn't see this team as being too far away, then tell the great unwashed among us what the team is missing to turn these close losses into wins against vulnerable teams.  Tell us what it will take for this team to get over the hump.  If you, as an analyst, don't offer the answer to that basic question and the reasoning behind it, then there is no reason to trash the fans (that one in particular) for wanting a change at coach.

Agreed.

I get that there are areas that have improved, but good lord, it took 3 years of "rebuilding" with Top picks in the draft to lose better? Awesome. The offense improved the second Blake Bortles took the field last year, but that was because it was non existent before that. Does that count too?  If you spend 2 top drafts picks in the first round on your offense, how could it not improve?

Who's to blame when your team has improved, yet you still lose to the leagues bottom dwellers after 3 years? Coaching.

I heard it.  He did.

His tone was beyond mere condescension.

It was near hostile.

I was surprised, to be honest.

I'll leave this here, how do you win an afc south title? Playoff spot? The answer is record. A win is a win and a loss is loss. It's all about the record. If anyone thinks otherwise then that's definitely something they need to have checked out.

One word would fix this team, "discipline", we lack this quality and it shows with every mistake, penalty, overthrown pass, dropped pass, fumble, blown coverage and missed tackle

Unfortunately, that trait generally ties to one place, can it be changed, possibly, but most of the time it needs replaced

If he did, then he'll have bigger issues to contend with than the coach.

The thing is, I don't necessarily think the fans are out of line in this case.

I think many, if not most of the fans, knew this roster was horrid when Gus took over.  I think many, if not most knew this wouldn't be a quick fix.

Many, if not most of these same fans, to say nothing of outside observers, felt the team has had some really good drafts the past two seasons.

The overarching sentiment was that this roster is in much better shape from a talent perspective than it was when Gus took over.  I don't want to be unfair to Lageman here, but I do not recall any public pronouncements from him trying to dissuade the masses from that assessment of the roster.

Fans are reasonably thinking that if poor talent led to poor results then better talent should lead to better results.

When, in the minds of the fans, that 2+2 is equalling <4, people are going to wonder, grumble and complain.

I don't know that what he said or his tone is necessarily grounds for termination or even anything beyond mild reprimand.

It was surprising, because of all of the Jaguars related on air personalities, he seems more even keeled than everyone else.

I would expect that from Boselli, but even with Boselli, there is a humorous edge to him.

Lags came across as a guy sick of Bradley being trashed and sick of the team losing who almost lost it during a segment.

That's why I believe the fans are completely justified. Id say most of the people on here were on board with the terrible first two seasons, because we kept hearing about how well the Jaguars were building the team for the future. They were so on board in fact, that a lot of people wanted us to lose on purpose.

" Wait until the team is built" they said. Guess what? Its year three, and however "built" this team is, they are still losing. Not only losing, but not taking advantage of a GOLDEN opportunity to take the division, and losing to one of the worst teams in the league.

Does Lageman really need to articulate this?  I can certainly understand his frustration if that's the expectation.  There's only so many ways you can say that incremental improvements, as long as they continue to progress and become more consistent, will lead to wins.

People are calling in every week demanding Gus be fired because they think that's somehow going to fix this team, and they're completely ignoring any improvements that are being made despite the fact that this team has been ravaged by injuries at key positions.  Is the team where we as fans would like them to be right now?  Of course not.  But, some people can see the improvements and recognize that things appear to be progressing, while others only look at the wins and losses.

How long could you sit there listening to "FIRE GUS" calls where people won't acknowledge improvement, and call injuries like the ones this team has experienced this year excuses.  Crikes.  We've got someone on this board who started a thread blaming Gus because the medical staff didn't diagnose and report a stinking concussion to him.  This is the kind of stuff these guys have to listen to on a weekly basis on every show, or when they're out and about and talking to fans.

It seems out of character for Lageman to call someone dumb, but if that caller ignores improvements that this team has seen from their younger players this year because it's not resulting in wins, and all they want to do is fire a coach, then I'm with him in thinking we've got some ignorant fans.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Agree with everything you said, Lags would have a hard time in a larger media market, can you imagine the fan backlash in Philadelphia/New York etc..?

Oh I must've hurt your feelings when I pointed out bortles lack of accuracy on deep passes and his questionable decision making at times. So what's your problem?
