Is this the worst Jacksonville Defense of all time?

Quote:People talking about wins and loss records for a QB are utterly clueless. This is the difference in the NFL......

JETS (4-1)- Ryan Fitzpatrick 9 TD- 7 INT-------defense #1 in NFL in opponents PPG at 15.3

JAGS (1-5)-Blake Bortles 13 TD- 7 INT----------defense #30 in NFL in opponents PPG at 29.3

All Fitzpatrick does is win...that's why he's played for so many teams...

Quote:Here are the two facts you need to know:

1) Bortles is the best QB the Jags have ever had

2) This Jags defense is the worst in franchise history
You lost all credibility when you said Bortles is the best QB the Jags have ever had. Here's the facts:

1. he hasn't played long enough to establish very much about himself. He is still very inexperienced. No knowledgeable commentator refers to him as the franchise quarterback; they say he 'may be' the franchise quarterback.

2. his stats have been deeply 'padded' by 'garbage time' scores and completions. A lot of Bortles 'success' on the field has occurred when it was no longer relevant to the outcome of the game. Remove the 'garbage time' throws and he looks pedestrian.

Seriously, you need to get over your boy crush of Bortles.

The bolded is patently false and I really wish people would stop saying this. Consider the following:

Bortles has largely played better in the beginning rather than the end of games. That's a well documented fact just by reading synopses of his games this season. Even if you haven't watched a single Jaguars game all year, the common narrative has been that he plays well in the first half of games then his performance takes a dive after halftime adjustments are (or in our case, are not) made.

Secondly, outside of New England, we have not seen much in the way of true garbage time. I really believe that our collective faith in our Jags to pull one out is so damaged that we've forgotten what garbage time truly is. I don't like calling people out and "Lawd" knows we suck as a team, but can we please stop with the misinformation.

Finally, going back to the Buffalo-Jacksonville analogy earlier, Yo Boy (I believe it was) referenced BBs untimely picks as they relate to field position and opponent scoring. I want to touch on this as his train of thought holds some merit. However, you can't tell me that Fitzpatrick's 7 picks are any less potentially damaging that Bortles'. Turning the ball over is always bad no matter how you look at it. The difference? Buffalo's defense can actually stop people as opposed to the proverbial red carpet to the end zone we trot out week in and week out.

Our defense is so simple and easy to figure out that teams are toasting it in the second half. A rookie, an aging backup and a career journeyman have all picked it apart.

EDIT:

Removed stats the formatting went haywire.

According to Wikipedia: Maize (called corn in some countries) is a member of the grass family Poaceae. It is a cereal grain that was first grown by people in ancient Central America. It is now the third most important cereal crop in the world.

It wasn't. There were 3 threads having the same discussion. They were merged.

Look at Seattle.Their defense is struggling and they have Kam and the best FS in the game. It's this defensive scheme. It's been figured out.

Sure glad we threw tons of money into free agency only to have a worse defense than last year. Not sure if any of the free agents have really played well on defense. Nice talent evaluation.

Will Philip Rivers throw for 1,000 yards against us? 503 yards against the contender Packers, so it has to be 1,000 yards against the ranked #32 team.

Let's put an end to this "garbage time" talk. First, how much "garbage time" are we really looking at? I'll take it week by week...

Week 1 - the final few minutes after an epic long drive by the Panthers won the game

Week 2 - hard fought to the end - no garbage time

Week 3 - the second half was pretty much all garbage time

Week 4 - game went into OT - no garbage time

Week 5 - game went to the end - no garbage time

Week 6 - Texans took control after pick six halfway into the fourth quarter

So the only garbage time stats was the last half of the fourth quarter in the Panthers and Texans games, and the second half of the Patriots game. I'm even being generous on the Texans game by including the Jaguars last 80-yard TD drive that led up to the successful onside kick that was mistakenly called back with an offsides call. In week one, there is no debate. Prior to the Panthers long drive when the Jaguars punted, the Jaguars were only down by 8 with 11 minutes on the clock. In week three after halftime the Jaguars only got in one three-and-out as the the Patriots put up 10 points to start out the third quarter going up 30-3, so you might as well include the entire half.

So the garbage time stats we're looking to subtract from his overall stats are...

Week 1 - 2 of 7 for 17 yards with an INT

Week 3 - 9 of 16 for 152 yards with 2 TDs

Week 6 - 9 of 17 for 110 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT

So the grand total of Blake's garbage time stats amounts to...

20 of 40 for 269 yards with 3 TDs and 2 INTs

When I subtract these garbage time numbers from Blake's stats through six weeks we're left with...

118 of 202 (58.4%) for 1361 yards (6.7 YPA) with 10 TDs and 5 INTs for a qb rating of 85.0

Blake is developing and i think this franchise should continue to invest in his development at all costs until he emphatically proves that he ISN'T the guy.

That being said, its undeniable that he had about 175 yards and two TDS in the last two games when the team was down by two or more scores and couldn't win the game without the recovery of an onside kick.... And in NE the game was out of reach for much of the second half and i know that he had two long completions in that game.

Bortles' knack for pushing the ball down field is commendable. It's good to see fearlessness and big throws that have been non existent since Brunell to Smooth n KMac.

His absolute flaw is the timing and nature of the turnovers. There are ints, then there's ints on the 1, pick sixes at the most critical junctures, etc. I call them game-over plays...they suck the life out of games and are devastating to any team.

In that regard, as promising as Bortles has looked, these ghastly mistakes have derailed the team and directly led to some losses. So, yeah, he is part of the problem, in spite of the struggling ground game and deplorable D.

The art of winning is grossly underestimated. Good QBs guide their teams to victory even in dire conditions. Blake Bortles is not there yet but he has time in his hands.
Success is a journey, not a destination. Go all out Mighty Jaguars.

I didn't mean to make it seem like none of Blake's numbers came in garbage time. We all know that some of them have. Some, in this case being what...roughly 12%, does not equal heavily padded or most like some people are trying to put forth. It's highly subjective and blatantly disingenuous. We're bad enough as it is...why try and paint any portion of this team worse than it actually is?
