Coaches on the hot seat

#1

Zygi Wilf already said he will retain Leslie Frazier, which I think is stupid. But what about Mike Smith, Gary Kubiak, Greg Schiano, and Joe Philbin?

Mike Smith: The Falcons were #1 in the NFC last season. Now they seem to be playing for the #1 pick in the draft.

Gary Kubiak: You can't really blame him for the Colts loss, but the rest of their 7-game losing streak does not help.

Greg Schiano: He will not be fired before the season ends, so we don't know but keeping him would be very stupid.

Joe Philbin: Many people think he is partially to blame for the locker room scandal involving two offensive linemen.

As of this afternoon,  Zygi Wilf hasn't publicly stated he will retain Leslie Frazier beyond the 2013 season.

For the sake of my favorite NFC team, I hope he does keep Frazier. I bet you would love that too, Lions fan.

It depends on who the Vikings would hire to replace Leslie Frazier.

Having said that,  while Frazier and his staff did a very good job in 2012,   the same can't be said for 2011 and 2013.   Frazier is probably better suited to be a Defensive Coordinator or DB Coach than a Head Coach.

The Vikings Secondary has been their worst unit this season,  especially with S Harrison Smith sidelined.   Yet,   more than anything,  the Vikings need better QB play than they have received this season.    Unless Josh Freeman picks up the system soon and then demonstrates he can be a long term solution,  there's a good chance the Vikings will draft a QB in the 1st Round of the 2014 Draft.

Now the Falcons are saying they still have faith in Mike Smith: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000...ns-in-2014

The only reason the Vikings would not draft a quarterback is none they like are available.

With the injuries the Falcons have had this season,   there's no way Mike Smith deserves lose his job.   Arthur Blank clearly realizes this, at least at present.   Smith is a coach that has led his team to the playoffs 4 out of 5 seasons and prior to this season had 5 straight winning seasons.   Prior to when Mike Smith was the Falcons HC,  they never had consecutive winning seasons!

The other key question with the Vikings is whether GM Rick Spielman will keep his job???   After having a tremendous 2012 Draft,   the Vikings haven't as yet received anywhere near close to the same type of results from their 2013 Draft and overall personnel decisions this year.   Including the lucrative contract that former Packers WR Greg Jennings got from the Vikings back in March as an UFA.

Greg Jennings is like Matt Flynn: he can only be good with the Packers.

Remember the Vikings lost Percy Harvin, who was both a wide receiver and the punt returner. He made Christian Ponder look pretty good last year.

Rick Spielman is more likely to be fired than Frazier.

I disagree regarding Greg Jennings.   While Aaron Rodgers would make practically any WR look good,  Jennings would be having a much better season if the Vikings QB play was noticeably better.

Keep in mind that the Vikings won their final 4 regular season games last season even though Percy Harvin went on I.R. prior to that.   Offensive Coordinator Bill Musgrave did the right thing by turning the keys over to Adrian Peterson.    Christian Ponder had his best game against the Packers in the regular season finale.   Otherwise,  in the other 3 wins,   Ponder's main contribution is he protected the football.    As for Harvin,  he was the Vikings Kickoff Returner prior to his season ending injury.    I don't think that Harvin returned any Punts last season.

If Rick Spielman is fired,  the chances of Leslie Frazier returning are probably closer to none than slim.   It's hard to envision any new GM in Minnesota wanting to stick with Frazier,  with the team having 2 horrible seasons in a 3 year period.    If Zigy Wilf insists to a new GM that Frazier must return for at least one more season under these circumstances,  then there will truly be plenty for Lions, Packers,  and Bears fans to celebrate.

Jerrah gave the exact same one word answer when asked if he would retain Wade Phillips. If anything, that is the first warning sign that Garret may not be safe
