College football is losing one of it's best coaches after this season.

Heck of a coaching run for Coach Beamer at VT.

My sister went to VT and one of my best friends growing up played TE for VT. For years you could pencil in Virginia Tech for 10 wins and either winning the ACC or competing for it. They made multiple BCS bowl games and even got to the BCS championship game in 2000 back when they were in the Big East. They did all that with mostly 3 star recruits. But the last 3 years Virginia Tech has been a .500 team and struggling to even win 6 games to make a bowl game. It'll be sad to see Beamer leave, but I think everyone who is a fan of Virginia Tech agrees that it's time for a new coach. I hope they pick an offensive minded coach who excels at recuiting.

Great career.  They are the program that UVA should have.  Beamer beat them to it.

And kept them from it.

In the 80s Welsh had the Cavaliers getting national attention.  During the 90s, the two teams swapped positions and it's been downhill for UVA since.

Last time UVA beat VT in back to back seasons was 1997 and 1998.

Last time UVA beat VT was 2003.  Since then, it's been the Hokies on an 11 game streak, the longest between the two.

I'm glad there was an amicable parting.  Not as sudden as Spurrier at SC, and not as ridiculous as what happened at FSU with Bowden.

Interesting to see if they go with the current regime (Shane Beamer or Bud Foster) or look in a new direction to lift the program back up.

Biggest key will be to keep the best of the Tidewater talent from going out of state.

Virginia Tech without Beamer? That's gonna be an odd sight.

The guy is a legend

He was known for his special teams expertise and innovation.
Respect the game.  Play with a sense of urgency.

1.)  Take care of the ball.  Win the turnover battle.

2.)  It's all about 3rd down.  Win on 3rd down to win the game.

3.) Playmakers make plays.  The only reason that you put your uniform on is to make plays. In order to EARN your paycheck, you must make plays.

Learn from the great collapse of 2023.

Man, that was fun to watch when the VT defense and special teams were at their peaks back in the day.

As ridiculous as it might have been, it needed to be done.

If I'm the AD, I'd clean house. No offense to Foster and the rest of the coaching staff, but when someone that iconic in the program leaves, I feel that it's best to start completely fresh. The expectations are just going to be too difficult for Foster to keep up with. Let him go and blaze his own path.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

I agree. It also seems like the program has gone stale in recent years and could use some new blood.

Ditto.

I believe that Bud Foster, due to what I've heard, may not have HC in his future.  His background qualifies him, but I believe there's something that's kept him from being heir (and from having other opportunities prior to now.)

The more I think of it, I'm not sure Shane is the answer either.

There will be a nostalgic push to keep things "in the family" (so to speak), but to pick up and move forward my gut is telling me there needs to be outside help/full retooling to lift it as high as it can go.

UVA is image conscious and models themselves after Duke, GaTech, and Notre Dame.  Under the Beamer era, Va Tech didn't care about their image and as a result, had significantly more arrests in comparison.  I used to live in DC for 12 years and UVA had a much better reputation than VaTech.  It was only recently that I discovered VaTech is a really good academic school.  Unfortunately, at times I really think the image of the football team diminishes the academic achievements of a university on a holistic basis.

The bolded couldn't be farther from the truth.

UVA historically has held their heads higher in the air and looked down on VT in a socio-cultural "superior" way, but you simply cannot whitewash the Beamer era as a "didn't care about their image" way whatsoever.  That would be complete ignorance.

Yes, the taste of success with Michael Vick did cause Beamer and staff to take risks in the Marcus Vick era that they never had before (or after), but make no mistake about it... they certainly have not tolerated any such behavior before or since.

The school was highly embarrassed by what younger Vick and his crew brought on the reputation of VT, which is a very good one outside that era.  They moved quickly and nipped it in the bud in a way few programs do, or have.

Good Point --- I was in DC during the Michael Vick era and yes, my memory does fall back to that and the Marcus Vick era (which was actually the 4-year period that things got out of control).  Given the fact that Beamer has been around for ~ 30 years .... I shouldn't let a 4-6 year period distort my perspective ...
