Gene's Biggest Bust?

But, how on earth can it not be the quarterback you traded up to obtain? The same quarterback that is one of the worst in NFL history and has proven himself incapable of leading and offense over the past 3 seasons. Gabbert is the biggest bust of the Gene Smith era. He is on par with Russell, Leaf, etc as one of the biggest busts in NFL draft history.
Gene's Myth
Quote:Sure it can. The Jaguars can release him and he goes on to have a great career at a team with some talent on the roster. Haha, in all seriousness though, Gabbert wont be in the NFL in 3 years Quote:The biggist bust of the Gene Smith era was Gene Smith. Are we still paying his contract? Anybody remember what the amount was? Even though it doesn't count as dead money for salary cap purposes that is some of the deadest money we will ever see. Gabbert because he is the most noticeable. For me? It is Alualu. Just watching him on the football field is an insult to the game.
Quote:Easily Gabbert. It's amazing that people here think he can still be a franchise QB. I let go of that illusion after his 2nd season. I hope Gene is taking orders at a fast food establishment here. Perhaps Gene was managing Brunell's Whataburger franchise. Gabbert is the easy choice with honorable mention going to the D-line picks. Hopefully we can be like Detroit was in their endless WR search and eventually select a winner.
Andre Branch has been the worst player on the field since the day he was drafted, all while being a high second round pick.
He gets my vote, followed by Gabbert. Can we just vote all of the above? We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Biggest bust, gosh thats tough it be much easier to say his best pick because there were not many.
I still have to say Alualu was the worst pick of the era because it was so off the wall and everyone with half a brain knew it was a horrible pick. While Gabbert has proven to be worthless, at least there was hope for him coming out of college. He just didn’t pan out.
Manziel 2014!
No one on Earth was surprised that the Jaguars went for Gabbert when he was there. That he hasn't worked out so far is unfortunate, but your top 10 QB not making it qualifies beyond all others.

I honestly can't pick just one. Last few years have been very, very ugly.
LOVE THEM JAGUARS!

I was. In fact i was suprised he was even being considered a first round pick after lackluster production in an offense the previous QB ( smaller and weaker armed BTW) owned and going 0-2 in bowl games being the center reason for the second loss with a Pic-6 while he team was up with 4 mins left. I honestly had no idea what Kiper and McShay were seeing. That had to be one of the bigges sell jobs ever IMO. Gabbert was quite literally hyped into the top 10 based on his "measurables" and "look of a QB" vs his actual game tape and stats. Somehow Gene was duped right along with everyone but the Redskins who has nobody at QB when they traded with us. Interesting question. Where do you guys think Gabberts goes if we didnt actually select him? I think the Geno Smith effect was going to take place and Gabby was set for a monster drop to the late first / early second. It just seemed like the other top teams in the draft order had figured something out much like with Geno. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

Minnesota would have taken him. They were dead set on taking a QB, which is why they took another guy that was considered a second round prospect just a couple of picks later.

I live in Minnesota and while Gabbert is bad, Christian Ponder is worse. He plays behind a decent offensive line, has (arguably) the greatest RB of all time in his backfield, and has solid weapons on the outside and at TE. We don't agree on much, but I feel Blaine would be competent here in Minnesota; Christian Ponder is the worst starting QB in football. Yep, when you add to that the fact that Ryan Kerrigan (the guy who the Skins took with our pick and who many thought we were targeting) is pretty dang good and would have given us an NFL caliber defensive end then you really learn just how bad the Gabbert pick was.

Smith got a new contract about the time the team sold. It was probably for two or three years, so he is still being paid well.

While I know Luck had success last year, Blaine Gabbert remains younger than Andrew Luck.
He's not quite 24 years old at this point. He very well may bust out, I'm also very biased as a fan of his, but he's not been around nor played nearly enough games to accurately read him. The people on here who will claim they know he will fail and they project themselves as right are taking the easy road. The majority of players fail at being superstars, even more so QBs as franchise QBs, so every time one is drafted, projected them as a bust and you'll be right far more than the guys who are claiming they might be successful. It doesn't make a single person a good judge at football talent, it purely means they are playing the odds which are heavily in their favor. I'd be awesome at betting on horses if I was allowed to win money by choosing the losers. |
