Obviously he's not what he was, so maybe he won't demand as much on the open market. I think if he's part of a committee, he can still contribute at a good level.

Would he take a 2 year deal?  That's the question.  I wouldn't be opposed to him walking.  It would be tough emotionally, but running backs can be found elsewhere.  The Bucs 3rd string guy came in and put up 150+ and 2 tds in a game.

Todman is just as good on a bad team when you factor in age and potential.  Let him go try to get a ring somewhere... he'll be drawing retirement before the Jaguars see a Super Bowl.

If we have a rookie QB, and if we endeavor to rebuild the OL, there are bound to be some protection issues as the QB gains experience and the OL gains continuity.

 

Having MJD there in pass protection for another year to ease in that transition would make me a little more comfortable.

 

A rookie RB might give more explosiveness, but it is questionable whether he can handle blitz pickup.  If I were sold MJDs replacement can handle blitz pickup as well as provide explosiveness and yardage in the run game, it might be different.

I'd be willing to go "year-to-year" with him at this point....i.e. reasonably priced 1 year deals with the intention of him having a timeshare/ backup, but thats about it.

It depends. 

 

The team did something similar with Fred Taylor, extending his contract while they developed his replacement.  He understood this, and mentored MJD until it was time to make the switch.  MJD can still be productive enough for this team to warrant keeping him around.  He's not the back he was early in his career, but he's a savvy veteran who can continue to provide you with a proven entity while the team develops his replacement.

 

I think reality has to be setting in for MJD that he's never going to get back to the play maker he was prior to the knee and foot injuries that have slowed him down.  If he's realistic, his contract expectations will fall in line with what the team is probably willing to give him to keep him around.  A reasonable 2 year deal isn't out of the question as long as he's willing to accept the fact that he's not a feature back any longer.

 

If he isn't reasonable, there's no point in keeping him around.  Some team will overpay for his services regardless of how his abilities have been diminished over the past couple of seasons.

I will never understand sentiments such as this.  The man is a multi-millionaire--he doesn't deserve ANYTHING.  Money going toward a "decent contract until he retires" could cost us and keep up from resigning people who will actually contribute going forward.  If he'll sign on the cheap on a year to year basis, great.  If not, sayanora.

Agree. The reality is that is is most likely gone because a RB needy team will overpay him.

Cause look what this fanbase is used to.. A few stars here and there, but the majority have been scrubs and outcasts from other teams, so i can't blame them..
