Playoff scenarios

Quote:Broncos need to keep winning for playoff seeding implications, trying to get that first round bye or the home field #1 seed.

They should beat the Raiders (although any given Sunday, you know).

But they have 2 tough games after that also:

@ PITT

vs Cincy

That Cincy vs Denver game is going to be HUGE for playoff seeding. It could possibly determine which team gets a first round bye or not.

Cincy has to have that first round bye IMO. If they have to play WC weekend vs Steelers,Chiefs,Texans they'll most likely lose again.

The Broncos and Bengals will literally be playing for home field in the playoffs when they meet in Denver.

That is likely. Although, both the Bengals and Broncos still have to face the Steelers before then. And the Patriots might easily jump back into one of the top two seeds by not losing the next couple weeks.

Sucks that the Patriots play against the Texans Sunday night. I wish they could both lose.

A couple weeks ago I read Peyton Manning's target to return is the Steelers game.

I'm just asking. I've been telling you for over a month now.

I think you should start your own thread about the NFC South. This one is about the playoffs.

Carolina Panthers

Already clinched NFC South title

Cincinnati Bengals

AFC North with a win

Playoff spot with a Jets or Chiefs loss

Denver Broncos

AFC West with a win and Chiefs loss

Playoff spot with a win and Steelers or Jets loss

New England Patriots

AFC East with a win and Jets loss

Playoff spot with a win or Steelers or Jets loss

Now that the Cardinals have clinched a playoff berth, they are going to be huge Ravens fans Sunday. They have done their job but need Seattle to lose.

Interesting tidbit about the Ravens vs Seahawks game. It is possible that Jimmy Clausen starts at QB for Baltimore this Sunday. Clausen already faced the Seahawks this season as a member of the Bears when Cutler was out. Clausen may face them again as a member of a different team.

I find it highly unlikely the Ravens beat Seattle this week, no matter if it's Clausen or Schaub that starts. Decimated by injuries, the Ravens are absolutely terrible this season.

No matter who starts at quarterback Baltimore has no chance. Both guys suck. I expect the Cardinals to wait another week for their NFC West title.

I was messing around with the ESPN Playoff Machine, and can make a few conclusions...

In the AFC, the top three seeds are the Broncos, Patriots and Bengals, although these last few games will determine their order within the top three. The fourth seed most like goes to the winner of the Texans at Colts game next week, but you can't totally count out the Jaguars should they win out. Then you have the Steelers, Chiefs and Jets fighting for the two Wildcard spots. The Bills have a shot to get in the WC mix if the Bengals win this weekend, but if the Steelers win it would take a miracle.

In the NFC the 1st seed should be the Panthers followed by the Cards with the 2nd seed. The third seed is most likely decided by whoever wins the week 17 Vikings at Packers game, and the fourth seed could conceivably be taken by a 6-10 team. All four teams are in it including the Cowboys should they beat the Jets or Bills. The wildcards are coming down to the Vikings/Packers loser along with the Seahawks and surprisingly the Bucs who are very much in the hunt with a week 17 win over a Panthers team likely resting players.

Currently the AFC ranks are Cincinnati #1, Denver #2, New England #3, and either Indianapolis or Houston #4. That will certainly change with Bengals/Broncos and Texans/Colts games approaching.

Last time I checked, the Jets have a better chance of clinching a wild card spot than the Bills. ATM New York has a better record. But with four games left, you can't rule out Buffalo.

OMG that would be insanity if a 6-10 team wins the NFC East! Do you really think it could happen? Imagine the outrage - people went nuts over Seattle playing at home with only seven wins.

More likely the winner will 7-9, but 6-10 is definitely possible. I don't see the Redskins beating either the Bears or the Bills. The Cowboys have a good shot at beating the Redskins week 17, and if they do the Redskins would likely be 6-10. The Redskins probably win their division at 6-10 as the Cowboys at best would only be 5-11 unless they beat the Bills or Jets and win the tiebreaker over the Redskins. I'm assuming here the Redskins beat the Eagles in which case they'll own tiebreakers over the Eagles and Giants.

Now the Eagles probably take the division at 7-9 if they beat both the Redskins and Giants, but lose either game and they're out of it as I don't see them beating the Bills or Cards. The Giants likewise could take the division at 7-9, but they would have to win in Miami this weekend and then beat the Eagles week 17. I don't see the Giants beating either the Panthers or Vikings.

In other words the Cowboys own all tiebreakers at 6-10 but probably end up 5-11 at best. This leaves the Redskins who own the remaining tiebreakers at 6-10. That said, if either the Redskins, Eagles or Giants make it to 7-9, that team should win the division. It would take a considerable upset for any NFC E team to make it to 8-8.

I looked at the playoff picture again. ATM Buffalo is #8 behind Pittsburgh. What that tells me is the Bills need both the Jets and Steelers to lose multiple games.

you miss a few things. Pitt will be in playoffs.

Buffalo jut needs to look at the Jets and KC

Buffalo just needs to look at the Jets and KC.

What they are saying now is Chiefs #5 and Jets #6. So if the Steelers get a wild card spot, they will replace the Jets or Chiefs. It is looking to me like one spot will be down to the Steelers or Jets if I am reading this correctly.

You might be speaking too soon. If Pitt beats the Bengals this weekend they basically knock the Bills out of it and put themselves in a great position to get the last wildcard. For the Bills to have a realistic chance they need the Bengals to win this weekend. Having said that, I'm picking the Steelers to win this week.
