Ok just finished watching him vs New Mexico, Nevada, and Wyoming.

 

It made me feel a lot better about what would happen if we miss out on Teddy. This guy can be a possible top 5 pick, and is better than Mariota/Manziel IMO.

 

A lot of the people on this board will be afraid of him because on the macro level he could be described as a Blaine Gabbert of sorts. Big arm, ideal size, false stereotypes of him being like his brother in the pocket, ect ect.

 

He has easily the best deep ball accuracy in the class, watch the New Mexico game to see that on display as he hits like 7 perfect bombs without missing. He will measure to have the same size and speed as Blaine, but Carr can actually use his athleticism and it shows up. Hes very decisive when to run and can extend the play a bit too. He doesnt have the pocket presence of Teddy, but hes not a sitting duck like Blaine/Chad.

 

What he lacks in anticipation he makes up for with elite arm strength. His arm is on the level of any top guy in the league. His offense is pretty gimmicky but he does what is asked of him well. The big issue with him is he is hesitant to go through his progressions. He forces some throws to his first read at times, similar to Mariota.

 

Keep in mind this is only from seeing 4 games, but i liked what I saw. All in all I would not be mad if we took him in the top 5 over the likes of Clowney and Barr. If you wait till the 2nd round or later you get the scraps, and will be hitching your wagon to a guy who historically has <20% chance of panning out.

i pretty much have similar opinion and ive been watching him for about two years now. good write up.

 

if only draftbreakdown have all of his 2011 games, they have two, where he ran a pro style offense his first year as a starter.  he had nice stats but i would like to watch the tape.

 

the concerns he had coming into the season was his footwork and pocket presence, his footwork has steadily improved and his pocket presence is so much better, its like 7 to teddys 9.  thats where teddy has the edge, hes more pro ready with better pocket presence and footwork.

 

both of them are very cerebral and are film rats. teddy also has an edge on anticipation and accuracy on short and medium passes.

 

imo carr is a better athlete, better/natural runner and has a better frame, elite deep ball accuracy and pinpoint touch passes on fade routes.  i prefer carrs leadership moreso than teddys, i see tom brady on how he handles his teammates.

 

teddy is the better overall prospect but since the nfl loves good measurables and big arms, i see him as the best challenger to teddy and i wouldnt be surprised if he overtakes him, carr is my dark horse #1 overall pick if not he will be the 2nd qb taken.

after all the potential qbs that had a "chance" to challenge teddy took a step back this week. derek carr is my dark horse first qb taken.  he improved every facet of his game this season. pocket awareness has significantly improved. his deep ball is one of the best ive ever seen in college.

yeah before the season he was a solid round 2 pick. but he has improved every facet of his game this season, especially his pocket awareness. you know that video was before the season right? he has been consistently lights out this season.

it has to do with the offense he runs and that he has no running game, he throws a lot of wr bubble screens to compensate for the lack of running game. basically hes the only offensive threat in the team so they pretty much throw 50x per game.

Aye, HeeRo are you a current/former Fresno student? Just curious I know your a big Carr fan. Looks like the MW Championship game will be in Fresno if they beat SJS. I live about 45 minutes away so if it is in Fresno I think it would be a good game to go to. Im not a Fresno St student or alum but seeing how they are the local D1 school I always root for them especially since Pat Hill is gone.

On paper, he seems very intruiging. I'd enjoy watching a game or three of him in action. Besides, Fresno State has got some talent in the stands, if you know what I mean.

It's dumb that your opinions change every week on these players when you could've formed them a while ago without ESPN's help. You were all in on Johnny Manziel before he had a rough game yesterday, even though he's still the same NFL prospect today that he was on Friday. Marcus Mariota was the same prospect after the Stanford shellacking that he was when his team was rolling 80 on the Little Sisters of the Poor, but tons on this board jumped off his bandwagon as soon as the Ducks were about to get shutout. How do you not understand this?

His offense throws a lot of screens. His biggest strength is his deep ball so YPA is not an issue.

nah i attend a different school, though i have a few friends that are current and former students.  one my friend from sjsu asked if i wanted to go to the game this weekend too bad its thanksgiving giving so i couldnt lol.  yeah i use to live close to fresno when i was growing up and ive always enjoyed fresno sports. go paul george!  i wish i can go to the mw championship but finals week is coming up and the drive is too long, but man you should go, it would be carrs final home game, i bet it will be packed. ask davante if hes gonna declare and tell burse to come to jacksonville lol.

Yep, he definitely has the talent. Tell me if you find any games where he was under a good amount of pressure. He has some decent pocket movement from what Ive seen but not elite like Teddy/Luck.

Rutgers. They actually blitz and put some pressure on him. Carr did ok in the pocket. Had a few meh moments and one where he climbed the pocket and delivered a strike to a wr coming across the middle. Better than anything we've had in a while, that's for sure.


He throws off his back foot a ton though. I know qbs need to do that occasionally and it's good he can do this accurately. But, there are times he could step into a throw and doesn't.


Also, nice to see he's had at least 2 game winning/tying drives.

This is why he reminds me of Stafford so much. He has a rocket arm and can deliver accurate passes anywhere on the field off his back foot. He also can throw from many different arm angles as well.
